I am in the same position as you Landon but I can purchase from the States or Canada it doesnt matter to me, but I am looking for a 17inch monitor.
I have gone to Future Shop and checked out their Samsung 172T, 173 and they are alright but the colour isnt as bright as I would like and well as I dont think the price justifies them (they have some ghosting)
Then i moved and checked out NEC 1760V-BK and since futureshop connects all their monitors in some weird way some of the picture quality is degraded (at least thats what they told me) but even then the NEC was the ugliest looking LCD i've ever seen and seemed very cheap the colours were bland and yes it might have 16ms response time but the picture quality was not up to standard in my opinion. Since Hitachi CML174SXW shares the exact same panel as the NEC 1760 in my opinion i would not buy those monitors
Then i saw Sony SDM-HS73-H it was beautiful, no ghosting that I have noticed, perfect blend of colour, amazing design easy to swivel and adjust. This beat all samsungs, and almost all NECs.
Why almost all NECs? Because I stumbled upon Multisync 1765 Series specs say it has 225cd/m2 and 400:1 contrast ratio. These figures are not anything to brag about; in fact have been surpassed by many monitors. I just couldnt figure it out. This monitor had the brightest colour, 0 ghosting, and put 1760 to shame in contruction. The problem it has an antiglare glass surface so it's like the LCD panel is "inside" the monitor. Some people do not like that. Also that particular model was hard to adjust in height (maybe because so many ppl have worn the model out by messing with it)
It seems strange that I found the 1765 to be 100x better than 1760 when basically its almost identical panel and 1760 has better specifications. Which leads me to believe:
1) specifications only tell half the story if not less
2) the monitors werent' configured properly (many cables to 1 connector box) and then from this box to 1 computer so they all have the same image. This can eliminate fair comparison through degradation of some of their signals (signal loss).
Other than that i haven't really seen a monitor that impresses me
So from my view the Sony was the most well-rounded and the nec 1765 is very hard to find so thats another downfall for it.
