17" laptops too big?

I saw the new Toshiba P25 the other day.. and its a lot better than the 5205-s705 i was looking at... but its rather huge...

Has anyone had any experience with this or any other 17" laptop? its 16.4" wide.... seems rather big... the other one is 13"... so there is quite a difference...

I won't be moving this a lot, maybe once a week to class or to do labs and stuff...

i think 17" laptops are designed for people the size of "Mini-Me"... even Yao Ming thinks it's too big.

i would buy a 13-14" slim laptop so it's easier and less unsighty to carry around, and save the money to buy a 17"+ LCD to use at home. else i think a 15" laptop is good enough.

I agree, unless you are looking for those laptops that are "desktop replacements"

If you have plans to move around alot with your laptop, the lighter the better.

The 17" PowerBook is VERY nice, but in my opinion it's too big, even though it's lighter than most 15" x86 laptops out there.

i think you'll also have a hard time finding a bag to carry it in. not many laptop backpacks can carry it. i think it's more of a desktop replacement computer.

yeah.. but i bet it's awesome for DVDs and games!

I am actually dying to buy a 17'' laptop but the toshiba is way to heavy. Apple has it at one inch thick and less than 7 lb! My current Inspiron 8000 is 1.75 in thick and 8 lb if not more. I do wish they offer the WUXGA resolution on them tho. I am using UXGA on a 15in screen right now, and I can't imagine using any resolution lower than it. I have to get a laptop soon though, it looks like maybe compaq X1000 is it. But I am kinda weary about WUXGA on a 15.4in screen (!) with a pixel density of 144 dpi compared to my current 133 dpi.

does anyone know if there's gonna be a 17'' laptop with WUXGA resolution anytime soon?

I find 16 and 17" LCD screens on laptops to be entirely too big. Even the 15.4" LCDs seem too big. Maybe these large screens are ok for desktop replacements, but a portable notebook with reasonable footprint IMO should have a screen no larger than 14" diagonal.

I agree with OldSpooky to the "T". I believe 14" models provide a great combination of screen size and portability. However, you have to make sure to find a model designed for a 14" and not one designed for a 15" that is downgraded to the 14". I work on these things, and I can't believe that people buy these 15/16" behemoths and travel with them. My wife used to use her laptop mostly on the desk, but then I put in a wireless card and now the laptop is only on the desk to charge. Laptops are meant to be mobile, but that is only my opinion.

Thanks for all the views...

After holding the 17" toshiba p25 for the second time and actually holding it out of the locked things at compusa, I have to say that it is way too big to even be considered a LAPtop

I am gonna get the toshiba 5205 s705... the one i've had my eyes on since april (was the s703 then)

I love it, except for 2 little things...
1) the dvd WAS a 4x according to everywhere, but now it seems to be a 1x... don't get how they can make a mistake like that and not offer a 4x replacement for owners at a discount or something
2) 1gb ram max 🙁
