17" laptop with 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 resolution

What is up with finding a laptop with these specs?

I don't need anything powerful. Just inexepenisve. I want a large monitor with high resolution though.

So, what can I get? I really want to keep this at about $700. Not some rediculous Alienware laptop for $2K.

And as a side note, Dell's web site sucks as does Gateway.

Have you heard of newegg.com? It has a pretty straight forward means of search & sort for most anything including notebooks like you want.

Thought about tryingnewegg, but I pretty much assumed that pre-built laptops with the screen I want will cost $1000+. It's kinda like havign to spend all the extra money on high level trim for a car when you jsut want the CD player in that package. Offf to newegg to see if I was right.

EDIT:
Much as expected. For what I want I am looking at $1050. newegg should be the model Dell uses for product searches.

I've found that once you start hitting the 17" range, the baseline components tend to be higher end. I'd imagine that the 17" screen at that resolution (not at 1680x1050 or even worse "900p" or whatever they're branding the low resolution stuff now) would push the laptop over your $700 price range. The laptops that *are* in that range probably won't even have an upgrade option to get to 1080p.

You could probably dig around Dell's (or another OEM's) refurb section and come across something in that range, especially if you're flexible on the other components. You could also look to custom manufacturers who might be able to take 17" chasis and slap on whatever components to get it within your price and spec range. Outside of a sale, custom manufacturers might be your best bet for a new in box system.

Otherwise...um...ebay?

Well, I did notice that I can get an Alienware refurb for about the same price ($1050).

So I could get some geek cred out of it.

I really could care less for performance for what I am doing. All I need is screen real estate.

Maybe I should just consider that desktop upgrade I've been pondering for such a long time. Hrrmmmmmmmm. Atelast that way I can get the monitor I want and probably save some money in the process. Or DUH .... jsut upgrade the ol' tube to something more modern.

EDIT: HAS THE WORLD GONE INSANE? $270+ for an LCD (for a desktop) that is 1920x1200. That was the cheapest one and it was 25". I just died a little bit inside.

you might try picking up a P-7811 FX on ebay

it was pretty much the last 'reasonable' laptop with a 1920x1200 monitor

In the TN market, there's been a HUGE push to 1920x1080 in the 23-27" range. Probably sharing panels with TVs and the like, plus catering to a standard TV resolution in the most popular panel type. I found 1920x1200 at 24" bad enough with the number of pixels per inch, but I'm a fan of high PPI. I can't imagine how pixelated 1080 would be at 25" at average computing distances 😛

1920x1200 TN panels seem to be going the way of the dodo bird, however. They're still popular in the PVA or IPS markets since those usually don't cater to the average consumer, but expect to shell out $300 at least if you can find a sale. A good IPS panel not on a sale can run $500 or more easily.

If you do drop down to 1920x1080, you're going to find tons more options, including some lower end 24"/25" monitors at sub $150 prices on sale. 1920x1200 is just getting rare for consumer level LCDs. Hell, Tiger Direct only carries two 1920x1200 monitors, but carries 125 1920x1080. If you're keen on saving money, dropping to a smaller screen at 1680x1050 or to a 24/25" at 1920x1080 might be your only bet.

Laptops are also following suit. Dell's even starting labeling their resolutions as 900p, or 1000p, or the like instead of actually listing the normal resolution. Really annoying.
