17-inch wide-screen notebook

According to sources, Taiwan?s Quanta Computer has landed Hewlett-Packard?s (HP) first 17-inch wide-screen notebook and could start shipments as early as the third quarter.

Until now, the only HP notebooks to feature wider screens have been the 16-inch Presario 3000 series, manufactured by Inventec.

Apple Computer in January launched the world?s first 17-inch wide-screen notebook? the PowerBook ? made by Taiwan?s Compal Electronics. Sources said Acer also plans to launch a 17-inch wide-screen notebook, to be made by its affiliate Wistron, in the fourth quarter.

Sources estimate 17-inch notebook shipments for each vendor to be at most around 10,000 units per month.

Some manufacturers believe that 17-inch notebooks will not enter the mainstream for the time being as they are considerably bigger, heavier and higher-priced than 15-inch notebooks. The larger size, however, allows 17-inch notebooks to fit more high-performance components for audio/visual and entertainment features that could make them popular in the consumer notebook market, they said.

Sources anticipate that Quanta?s total notebook shipments to HP will reach about one million to 1.5 million units this year. Quanta is said to be also manufacturing the Pavilion series and Presario 2100 and 2500 series for HP.
