17 inch vs 19 inch lcd

Can someone tell me why 19inch screens are so popular eventhough they have the same resolution as a 17 inch screen? I would have thought that the smaller the pixel size the better.

I'm trying to find a new lcd screen to replace my very old 19" sony crt, but I don't know which screen to buy cause all of the different panels and different ways of measuring response time makes it impossible to compare them. (If only there were tests like the ones one can find at toms hardware for every single lcd out there).

Do I have to chose between fast response time and colour reproduction? Can't I have both?

19" is popular because some people find text too small on 17 LCD's.

furthermore, many CRT owners own 17" screens that they run at 1024X768 or 19" screens at 1024X768 or in some cases 1280X1024; 19" LCD's help aid the transition for many CRT owners or those who don't find that they need to have the highest resolution possible.

It's a matter of preference; some people are "used to" 800X600, so 1280X1024 is a lot of screen real estate for them!

Well as people say: Because its bigger. Same reason some people buy projectors or 60" plasmas. Bigger picture. With a 17" LCD you would have to sitt closer to the screen to have it fill a certain amount of you field of view. With a 19" LCD it becomes easier, since the screen need not be hanging over you keyboard to get the desired FOV filled.

Bigger text. If you can read 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT (17" viewable), then go for a 17" LCD because of the finer dot pitch. You do have to choose between color and speed sometimes. TN panels are fast, S-PVA panels have good color, and S-IPS is kind of an unhappy medium. The Overdrive S-PVAs are probably your best bet, but I don't know if any 17" LCDs have that technology. It seems as though 17" LCDs are being phased out.

Not all 19" and 17" screens have the same resolution. 17" LCDs' maxxed-out at 1,280x1024. Most 19" LCDs' have a maximum resolution of 1,280x1,024 as well, but can now be found in 1,600x1,200 with decent response time for gaming such as the Samsung 205t. The 204t also has a.0264mm DP too.

I have two 17" Samsung LCDs' - the 172T and the 172X. Both are 1,280x1,024 maximum/native resolution with .0264mm DP, but the 172X has a 12ms response time compared to the 172T's 25ms response time. I am waiting for Samsung to release a 20", .0264mm DP, <8ms response time, that does 1,600x1,200 or better before my next upgrade, I'm hoping within 18 months.

BTW, I like Samsung LCDs' because they are well-designed and feature clean styling combined with great performance. Some U.S, retailers will honor Samsung's 0 Dead Pixel Policy. Ask before you buy. Link to Samsung USA's 204t page:

The 204T is 20", not 19".

BTW, i wouldn't bother with the 204T.

I have it, & it seems most have a jerkiness issue when scrolling or moving anything on the screen side to side, which really sucks for fps games.

Maybe check out the even newer 214T.

Yes - you are correct n7. Glad you pointed that out, as I forgot that.

17" viewable is too damn small for gaming, that is why. It's 2005- most people have 19-20" viewable, it makes a big difference.

The pixel size of a 17" LCD is too small for prolonged use for me. I think the pixel size on the Samsung 214t is perfect at 0.27 mm.

* Larger screen. Meaning easier-to-see text, better if you're watching movies from a distance, etc. Even though yes it is the same resolution as a 17". Along the same lines, some 19" monitors, even though they are limited to 1280 x 1024 pixel resolution, can display 1600 x 1200 resolution (via interpolation). My 19" at home does that.

* Different choice of panel types. For the most part, if you're getting a 17", you're getting a TN panel. But 19" and up is where you get all those fancy MVA PVA IPS stuff.

* Size trends. As manufacturing costs go down, it becomes more and more affordable to get a bigger monitor. Before, 15" monitors were considered big (for LCDs). Now, they are considered fairly small. As time goes on, more and more people will have 20.1" monitors. Then 23-24". Etc. I guess this means one day everyone will have 80" monitors for pennies. Okay, just kidding.

* Chic. Somehow, bigger looks better. This depends on the person though.

If you are looking for a new monitor and like fine dot pitch check out some 20 inch ones. The Dell 2001fp is wonderful and gets good reviews on site like this. The other reason people are getting larger lcds is because they have teh real estate on their desk. My 20 inch dell takes up less space than the old 17 inch crt it replaced.

For obvious reasons, more screen space. Same reason people buy big TVs when just about all TVs have the same resoultion.

Also, I personally would go for a 19" LCD over a 17" because you can letterbox the screen when using 1024x768, which would eliminate stretching when operating out of the native resolution, and you still have about the same amount of screen space.
