First off does ibm even sell any laptops or thinkpads with 17 inch monitors ?

I know 17 inch notebooks are a lot more heavier than 15 inch notebooks but I think I may need a notebook monitor that is that big so I can see it lol.

It seems like after using a 19 inch CRT computer monitor for so long anything smaller I just can't see anymore

Is it worth the extra weight to have a 17 inch notebook rather than a lighter 15 inch notebook ?

have you ever used a laptop with a 15 in screen? they aren't hard to see. depending on the native resolution, my laptop default is 1024x768 which is huge but a lot of newer laptops have resolutions of 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200

Yes I am on a IBM Thinkpad and it has a 15 inch monitor.

The native resolution is 1024x768 but its still hard for me to see.

My 19 inch CRT monitor for my pc is for the most part fine but my laptop I have trouble with sometimes.

what resolution is that crt at? if you can't see on a 19"crt above 1024, you may be legally blind

Depends on the user, i've used a 17" laptop and a 15" laptop, it's nice to have the extra screen space, but the thing was a desktop replacement when i wanted something to carry around and use on the move. As such my sister now has my 17" laptop and couldn't be happier.

What laptop do you have now and what is the monitor size?

I don't know how people can use the 12 inch to 14 inch laptop monitors.

I've got one that's near identical to a toshiba Tecra 15" and a compaq 17" that uses a P4 desktop CPU (Presario 3000 i think).

Go to a shop and see what they are like to use in person. There's got to be one that you can try out for a bit to see if you can use it at all.

I had a 17-in screen lapotp for a couple of years, and hauled it around many places and countries. It weighed 9 lbs with battery.

I gave it to my son and got myself a svelte HP DV-1000 w/14.1 in sreen, WXGA - and have really enjoyed shedding 3.5 lbs. :)

As for seeability - no problem, and I have lousy vision (cataracts, retina surgery, glaucoma). I use the Native Resolution but have the display of text at LARGE. Works great for me.

At home I have a 19-in LCD - and really, there is not much difference in the size of text as displayed. The Ultraview screen really helps.

Are Ultraview screen only for HP laptops ?

Also what setting do you have for display of text as LARGE ?

There are so many text sizes options you can change.

My biggest problem is the text gets so large its hard to read a whole thing or it will go off the monitor all together.

Then theres the problem of websites text not changing and still being to small.

have you thought of buying a 15'' and with the price difference, buying 19'' LCD?

I have a 21" CRT at home and a 22" at work. I've been looking at notebooks recently and really like the current Compaq's (Turion 64-based)... Anyway, the feature that caught my eye was the 14" WXGA. IMO, the primary goal of a notebook is to be portable... the size/weight of anything above 15" XGA compromises that goal.

I'm going to propose a radical solution:

-Buy the most portable notebook you can find (15" screen or less).
-Schedule an appointment with an optomotrist.
-Buy contacts/glasses.

Seriously, a friend of mine had insisted on using large CRTs running at 800x600 for years. He recently bought a new laptop with a 15", 1280x800 screen. He now wears contacts.

If you're a spoiled brat and want the biggest and best and have no thought that laptops are intended for mobility, then be my guest, j/k
