17 in LCD monitors suck?

I just got a new Viewsonic VA720 LCD that is 17in and 1280 by 1100 or something. Anyways, it is VGA analog and the video quality is pure crap.

I had a generic 15in LCD before that was 1024x768 and it looked about 2x better. Is it simply that my eyes are bad and I cant focus, or is it possible that this resolution is pure crap on a 17 in LCD? The focus simply looks horrible...

Should have done your research in the first place before buying, or at least saw the model you bought in the flesh then you could have made an informed decision. Perhaps you have just got hold of a damaged one! At native resolutions of 1280 x 1024 the clarity and colour quality is excellent on my Hitachi CML174. Most ppl on here who have purchased 17" LCD's really like the quality, me included. Popular brands seem to be Planar, samsung, Hitachi to name but a few.

As you said your 15" was twice as good. Your 17" should be better still if it's current technology and there should be no reason why not. I'm not familiar with the model you have though so it's hard to have anything to say which has any real substance.

If its that bad return it IMO. Browse these forums there are plenty of threads about LCD's and plenty of ppl have posted their opinions etc...

Shame though. I wouldn't be too keen to post something as "17 in LCD monitors suck?" as they clearly do not, but it's all dependent on the individual :(

it's analog. what do you expect? the cable is probably not so good.

maybe you're not using the native resolution, too.

Did you try the auto adjust button that most LCDs have ,this will adjust the screen to give the best possible image quality, btw it`s aways worth buying a LCD with DVI if your budget allows,DVI is just excellent period.

From what I've heard DVI is very important, yet almost no monitors at bestbuy compusa, or microcenter, are capible of even using it! :-\

I would suggest taking it back to wherever you got it. Find yourself a Dell 10% off coupon and get the Planar PX171M-BK 17 for $396.
16ms response time/DVI/pivot.

Dont blame it on analog. My NEC 1760V is very crisp and clear with analog.

If he says it looks like pure crap, DVI would still look crappy... The difference between the two isn't night and day, its actually minimal in my experiences.

Dude you dont know $|-|!T if you think 17in LCDs suck, almost everyone I know including myself has 17 LCDs and loves em. I wouldnt trade my 172T (samsung) for anything (except maybe a 192T hehe).

ditto. My 17" 1760V looks great, too. The fact that yours looks bad may be several things:

1) The video cable could be bad, and need to be replaced

2) you may not be running in the native resolution (1280x1024 @ 60Hz refresh, usually)

3) the settings on the monitor itself could be screwed up (try the auto-adjust button function, as stated before)

4) don't trust the Windows generic monitor drivers; go to viewsonic's website and see if you can get any model-specific ones. The generics make my screen look like junk compared to using NEC's own drivers.

Analog does not suck.

It's a little different these days then in the past.
In fact you would be hard pressed to tell the difference on a good monitor.

Don't just jump to the conclusion that because it is analog that this is the problem. Regardless of whether it is anelog or digital it shouldn't be out of focus providing of course that you do have it set in it's native resolution , which probably should be 1280x1024 to make sure just look at the manual that came with the monitor. Assuming that you have done this anyway and are still having problems you should return it could be faulty. Do your research properly and once you have narrowed down your choices go and see them in the flesh.

I have a Samsung 213T 21inch LCD (Digital) and a Samsung 800TFT LCD 18inch (Anelog only) when you put these two side by side you can hardly tell the difference.

All LCD manufacturers are not created equal

I currently have a Viewsonic VG150 (15") and a Planar PV174 (17.4"). I am extremely happy with my Planar PV174, I', using it DVI connection to my GeForce4 Ti4600 video card. I play alot of Ghost Recon and other first person shooter type games without any problem. The images look sharp at native resolution (1280x1024). If I change to 1024x768, everything looks like crap.

Two things I can think of:

Poor quality shielding on the VGA cable, or using an extension cable. Maybe it's broken even...

The other option is that the graphics card sucks donkey ass. I used to have a Voodoo Banshee waaay back, and the image quality was the worst I'd ever seen at 1024x768. What graphics card are you using? If it's cheap, it's possible that the RAMDACs aren't up to spec or the filters are cheap, = nasty.

My Hitachi CML174SXW looks far better than anything else ive used.
Maybe you have the resolution set to 1024x768 or even 800x600. Run it at 1280x1024 and it`ll look amazingly clear.

I have to agree with everyone. I have the Viewsonic VP171B and it is very very good! No complaints at all. It is sharp and crisp and bright. I am using DVI but even if analog resulted in a little less quality, I can't imagine it being too much worse.
