From what I know (and thats not too much :)) I believe that Samsung manufactures LCD's and Monitors for Apple. I'm not sure about the new 17" but I believe that they manufacture all the other ones so the 17" may be samsung too...

After pumping a couple hundred million into Lucky Goldstar Philips, I'm guessing Apple is going to source all of their LCD's from there. Here's the closest match:

Lucky Goldstar LM171W02 Panel

17" widescreen 16:10 LCD panel
1440x900 native res
200 nits brightness
350:1 contrast (apple quotes 300:1 contrast)
Viewing angles: 120 degrees V, 150 degrees H (apple quotes 90 V, 120 H)
25ms response time (not sure if that's total or just rise or just fall).

Though Apple brags that their LCD's have

twice the brightness, sharpness and contrast

of

those bulky beige 17-inch CRT displays

The sad truth is, 350:1 contrast is nowhere near twice the 500:1 a normal CRT would be, and not even close to twice the 800:1 or more a good AG based CRT would be. In the world of Steve Jobs, fact has no place. Statements are meant to be swallowed, hook, line, and sinker, without regard to reality.

The only reason people think the apple screens are so wonderful is because Apple says they are. Place Apple's 22" Cinema display next to any other UXGA native 20+" LCD and you'll realize how bad the Apple one is. Place Apple's 23" Cinema HD display next to any other 1920x1200 LCD and again, the apple will look horrible. These panels they use from Lucky Goldstar Philips are really bad compared to the panels from Fujitsu, Acer, and Samsung.
