A friend wants to buy himself a 17" LCD, however he's an avid gamer; He looks to me for advice, and I don't want to dissapoint him. I was hoping I could get some suggestions.

Please list what is in your opinion the best LCD that meets the following category, and any reviews if possible:

1) Has 16ms response time
2) Is 17" (1280x1024)
3) Costs under 1500$ canadian. If possible, list also any under 1000$ canadian as a "budget" choice.

I'm confused, your title makes it sound like a laptop but you make it sound like an LCD for a desktop?! If it's a desktop LCD get the VP171b, you won't be dissapointed with it.

Wow.... ur budget is hmm..... HUGE! $1000 CDN for a 17" LCD? I just picked up one yesterday at $499 + tax. 17", 1280x1024 and has 16ms Response Time. 260 cd/m? and 500:1 contrast ratio. That's what I got cuz i'm on a budget. No DVI though. WHat you might want to look at is a 17" with the above spec but with DVI. Those cost around $700 + tax, I believe LG has one but i can't remember the model.

Last time I looked (2-3 months ago) Futureshop sold the CHEAP budget LCDs for 700$ (The cheap 25ms Samsung ones) +, I'd like to know where you're buying them...

He probably doesn't care about DVI; it doesn't make much difference anyhow.

Actually DVI does make a noticable difference....

I think that I am going to buy this one. It doesn't hurt that I have a $50 coupon to go with it, but it looks more than reasonable.

Looks nice (both the specs and the bezel), and the ability to pivot is a big plus.

That monitor is very good. The text is very clear as I sit here typing on it. Only problem is the layer of dust that has settled on the screen. :(
