before I post this the hp price was 999 dollars... but i think that i could do an effort to get something on that price...

He said $1000-1100... Not $1600. The Asus is pretty good, but for a bit more there he could get the P-7811fx. Maybe you could stretch your budget to get the gateway or the asus.

You definitely want to look for Gateway gaming laptops...they can be had for a great price.

I agreed with you Gateway has the better price for 17 inches notebook

Does DDR3 provide a huge performance boost in laptops? And how much better is an Intel Core 2 Duo over their Centrino?

GDDR3 is certainly better than GDDR2 in laptop GPUs, but as far as system memory goes, I don't think so at the moment - at least not enough for the premium you'd pay on such a system.

Centrino is a marketing term. Centrino means it has a certain intel processor (depends on which centrino), chipset, and wireless. So most likely the "Centrino" is a Core 2 Duo.

i have a gateway 17 inch gaming laptop but apparently they discontinued it with another model. it's a great machine, but something happened to it recently where my screen would be distorted when viewing dark colors. was thinking about selling it as-is cause i'm very sure the problem can be fixed.

Best Buy had a Toshiba with a 17" monitor, the Athlon 64X2 TL60 CPU,
3 GB RAM & 250 GB HDD, model #L355D-S7825 ==>$549

also an HP G 60 235Dx with a 16" monitor, 3 GB/ 320 GB, the T4200
dual core Intel CPU, + a webcam ==> $499 !!!

just f'ing amazing.
