16x vs 8x when burning at lower speed?

I have some important dvd-r discs to burn and will be doing so at a low speed to be as careful as possible. Is the quality difference between 16x and 8x enough that it will matter which I choose to burn on? My theory is that the 16x ones should be over-engineered in general so there'd be less chance of problems down the line, but I might just be over-thinking it.

Anybody have any ideas about this?

There is basically no price difference between 8x and 16x dvd +/- r's, so just buy some decent brand 16x ones like Memorex or Verbatim. The first DVD I burned was at 16x, and it had a little skippy spot on some DVD players, but not others. I burn most things at 12x now because it isn't much of a time difference and then you are less likely to have trouble.
