ok i have a 16x toshiba DVD rom drive and when I play DVD's it is a lttle bit choppy. Usually on more high action/movement shots, but it is very annoying. I thought a 16x drive should be fast enough so that it will not be choppy. I have a Radeon 32mb LE video card, asus a7v133 mobo and 900mhz Tbird. I dont think my hardware speed is the prob. I am using Ati Player 4.1.0.0 as my software. any thought or ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

Regular DVD movies only playback at 1X... so obviously a 16X drive is more then suitable, as is any other DVD drive available.... the higher speeds above 1X are only really useful for data DVD's.

The hardware sounds more then adequate for smooth playback... all I can really suggest is to make sure all your device drivers are updated.

Check the DMA options in device manager for the DVD drive. Try it both ways. Always reinstall the VIA AGP gart driver after ATI MMC+DVD as it sometimes gets overwritten during the install process. Also, start>run>msconfig>ok>startup>uncheck ATIPOLAB>apply.

ok, i checked the DMZ box but in my msconfig there is no ATIPOLAB running...is that a problem or is that good since i was going to uncheck it anyway?

but there are 3 others: ATI launchpad, AtiCwd32 and AtiQiPcl....all are currently checked.

As far as I know there us no requirement that anything ATI needs to be checked in msconfig/startup. Uncheck them all, restart. If 98se you can and should uncheck all but scanreg and systray anyway IMHO. Did you reinstall the VIA AGP driver?
