Hi ,

I bought a DVD-RW a few weeks ago , and was wondering why it says 16x in the specs but has never went past 8x.

The DVD Drive is a :-

Sony DW-D23A 16x Dual Layer DVD±R/±RW Black

Ive only been able to find Blank DVD -R and +R that say 8x on them i was in about 8 different shops , but some guy that sold me a pack of 25 DVD-R 8x disks said if my drive can run at 16x the disk will run at 16x ??

Anyway is this true , or do i need 16x blank disks to get my drive to run at 16x ?

To be sure and burn @ 16x you need media approved by the burner manufacturer to be compatable @ 16X, some 8x media might work, but no guarantee

That drive has a 16X +R and a 12X -R recording speed. There are some drives that will let 8X media burn a little faster than normal, maybe 12X. I've never seen 8X media reach 16X though.

So if you found 16X +R media it would reach theoretically reach that 16X mark. However the difference between 8X and 16X is like 4 minutes. Unless you can find some 16X media near the cost of the 8X then I'd just stick with the 8X.

Your drive will never reach 16X with -R unless Sony releases a firmware to bump up its speed.
