Hi gang,

If you guys have a second, I was wondering if anyone had the answer to my question. The problem I've been having is with a Black Lite-On 16x DVD Model# LTD-166s. Recently I purchased this drive from the FS/T forum here on AA tech, and although the drive works fine, it makes a very odd noise. The noise can be described as a light slushing sound (almost like a bunch of tiny ball bearings whirling) when the DVD initially spins up, and spins down. Now I've had several optical drives before ranging in varying speeds, but never encountered a noise quite like this?

Would you say there is something internally loose within the drive? Do some drives make these type of noises? Any tips and tricks? Thanks for your time and all input appreciated.

Sounds like what you are describing is the balancing mechanism in the drive. I know what you are saying it is a very odd sound that catches your attention. It is perfectly normal though with the liteons.

try some different brands of Media. Mine buzzes more with cheapo disks. TY seems more in balance.

I have a Lite-On LTD-163D I got from OfficeMax and it makes the same noise. One of the first discs I played was a rental DVD that was too scratched to be read. That's when I first heard it. I thought it might have fux0red my drive, but I guess that noise is common.
