16mb cache vs standard 8mb

It doesn't make much of a difference at all in benchmarks I've seen.

The two types of sataii drives I chose for my machine are both 8mb, and I researched quite a bit. I could have gotten whatever I felt like - like maybe the 16mb WD - but in the end that 16mb doesn't make much of a difference.

The market standard is 2MB. Not 8MB. If you were going to use the 16MB cache drives in a RAID array(5), then I can see the justification. But other than the warranty difference, I'd get the cheapest.

i have a maxtor 16 meg PATA drive. i switched to it from a WD 120 GIG 8 MEG cache and noticed it booted faster. i believe they are worth the money, i noticed a difference.

Faster boot isn't a result of more transfer cache.

I went from a Maxtor 2 MB ATA 133 hard drive to a 16 MB one and I couldn't really tell the difference but the guy at the store said there was a huge difference I benchmarked my drive somewhere here.

Except for the fact that the new gen HD coming from Seagate, WD all have 16mb cache.

I have the PATA 16mb 250g Maxtor. Compared to the other 8mb Maxtors I have (as well my Seagates and WD's), the speed difference is noticable without having to use synthetic benchmark utilities to check. Particularly in applications loading up and in defragging. I'd say it's the fastest drive I've used to date.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it runs hotter than any other HDD I own. It's the first HDD I've owned that prompted me to get a HDD cooler. Not that there was a problem without it, it was just for the piece of mind.
