16GB RAM: Go with (4x4GB) or (2x8GB)?

I'm picking up a laptop (Sager NP9150) and the vendor has a deal where it has 8GB 1600mhz (2x4GB) stock or I can:

1. deduct $50 and go with 8GB 1333mhz (2x4GB)
2. free upgrade to 16GB 16000mhz (4x4GB)

Looking on newegg it seems I can get 16GB 1600mhz (2x8GB) for about $70-80, then i'd sell the 8GB 1333mhz. Are there any benefits of having 2 sticks instead of 4?

I do believe this is in the wrong section? I'd personally go with the free upgrade, depends on what your finances are like and if you could do with saving $50.

I would always follow my own rules-of-thumb on this one.

First rule: always minimize the number of slots used for the amount of RAM chosen. If you have a choice, you would initially get the 2x8 kit.

Second rule: If you bought a 2x4 kit, found a deal on another identical 2x4 kit and already purchased it, then found the 4x4 configuration working to your satisfaction or better, don't spend the money on the 2x8 kit.
