16GB Memory Module

Does anyone know when we will starting having single 16GB memory module? Right now, the max is 8GB per module...well, unless I'm still hiding in the cave and haven't noticed it yet.

Interesting question. We're in transition now between DDR3 and DDR4. The capacity of a single module has increased from one generation to another.

I could also ask why you think you need more than 16GB of RAM. I can think of ways it would increase performance slightly, if you're RAM-caching your persistent storage. But 16 GB is ample for that plus gaming -- so I would think -- so I've so far seen myself. And some folks have certain specialized applications which can use 32GB or even more.

So I won't ask . . .
 
It you go to System Info; you will be surprise how much memory Windows actually uses for Internet surfing and video play. On my system it about 3 GB.

I too was alway try to maximized on the RAM; but now I feel that for my needs I don't every need more then 8GB. But will get another stick to max speed dual memory configuration - total 16GB! LOL!
 
Personally, I am not going to bother with DDR4 until 16gb sticks are widespread enough. Maybe a couple of years from now.

Also, if you are into high-res photo/video editing, extra ram is always handy.

I agree to a point. I would be unwise to tell anyone what their needs are. I've often wondered about folks who insist on having 32GB. Or -- more . .

I might also mildly agree with Harry_Wild. With 2x8GB, and various (and concurrent) usage, I don't see myself "running out of RAM."

But now, I wouldn't be satisfied with just 8GB. There IS a very good use for the ample surplus above that in my systems. I have RAM-cached SSDs on every machine but my server. One laptop is limited to 8GB, only needs about 4 to 5GB maximum for just about anything, and the remaining 3GB caches a drive connected to an SATA-II controller. With those limitations, it actually makes quite a difference.
