I was disappointed to find a large portion of the few user-reviews were unfavorable: one reported "slower than 1-GB version", others reported intermittent disconnects and failures. Had that been a smattering of problems amongst largely positive reviews, I'd have jumped on this, but I'm scared-off.

High density flash is probably using multi-level flash memory (that is - each cell has 4 states instead of 2 (on and off) and, thus, represents two bits instead of one). Because error correcting mechanisms have to be far more robust to deal with multi-level flash, the devices are slower.
