16bit or 32bit desktop resolution in Win98SE?

I'm remember years ago when this seemed to be a performance issue for some reason and people were recommending keeping your desktop at 16b instead of 32bit - does this hold true anymore? The video card in the system in question is an older 16meg TNT2 if this is a factor, also this question is in regard to 3D gaming if that is also a factor.
 
Well... used to be that many games only supported 16 bit so it was better to be in the same res settings as all your games.
