1680x1050 on a 6800 GS

Will my 6800 GS @ 520 / 1250, which gets around 6200 points in 3D Mark 2005 be able to handle 1680x1050 on the 22" Sceptre X22wg? I don't really play that much, but when I do, it's mostly CS:S, DoD:S, and F.E.A.R. Combat. I'm not looking to max out the settings, but for the Source games, I'd prefer to keep HDR enabled, and at least get 2x AA to get rid of some of the jagged edges. I don't need 50 frames per second. I just need it to appear smooth.

I'm kinda doubting it. That res might be a bit too tall for that card, especially using FEAR.

I'm kinda doubting it too, comfort zone for that generation of video card is the 1280 res neighborhood. 1680 plus HDR will probably make it cry for mercy.

Hmm... It's getting 25.4 fps in Lost Coast with HDR enabled at stock speeds at 16x12 with 16x AF, which is slightly higher than the resolution I'm planning to run it at. I'm going to just assume it'll be getting ~28 frames/sec overclocked, and even a bit more if I lower the AF settings. Plus, with the high resolution, jagged edges shouldn't be too big of a problem, right? I could probably pull off 2x AA and 4x AF at just under 30 FPS. More fps would be optimal, but that should be smooth enough for occasional play, right? I'm not too concerned about F.E.A.R., as I don't play it too often. I guess I'll just lower the resolution and set the extra pixels black via the nVidia control panel.

Thanks.

I don't want to start a new thread for this question, but would a 6800GT be able to handle the 1680x1050 resolution?

My m170s 6800 Go Ultra (same as GS) is clocked at 450/1.06. I don't have FEAR except the demo, but HL2, Lost Coast, & Epi 1 run well at 1680x1050 with HDR & AF, 2x AA. They run OK at 1920x1200 with AF, without HDR & AA. All settings maxed. With FEAR you'll have to lower to 1280x900. COD2 runs OK at 1440x900 with AF, no AA - maxed settings. Eveyone's tolerance for low FPS is different, so test it out to see.

BTW, my 7600GT (590/1600) in my desktop is somewhat faster. I can up the res 1 higher in each game with similar speeds compared to the m170.

6800 won't handle the res.. may be playable with everything at lower settings (lower texture quality, no aa, very little af) if you can stand the eyesore and don't mind dipping below 30fps.. most monitors can interpolate lower than native res (tho the image suffers) and you'll like want to run thngs at 1280x900 or lower depending on the game..

6800GT is almost in the same boat, but not as bad. older games will be okay for the most part, but you'll still likely need to make many compromises in the are of image quality (i just took the 6800GT out of my wife's computer a few days ago, and it had problems keeping a decent framerate in WOW at 1440 unless i turned texture quality way down with everything else at low-med settings). decided to stay with agp a while longer and installed an x1950 pro, and in many cases it's 2x faster even when running higher settings than the GT. don't get me wrong, the GT has served us well for 2.5 years, which is remarkable for a graphics card, but it's age definately shows at higher resolutions with newer games - even games like WOW which isn't exactly 'taxing' on the system (like rainbow6, for instance).

I Just grabbed my 20WMGX2 and I can play CSS at native 0xAA 4xAF full w/o HDR or Bloom

Now, that is when playing offline with bots. Online with real people 0xAA 2xAF and medium settings is more suitable.

I have much lower specced card

People with Dell 2001FPWs over a year ago didn't have problems with the 6800GS. It'll run FEAR at low-medium settings, but will handle Source games no problem. My old 6600GT could run CS:S at 1600x1200 with no AA/AF so I don't see how a 6800GS can't run a lower resolution. 1680x1050 is not a new thing that just came out. People have been gaming at 1600x1200 and 1680x1050 for many years.

I have a 6600gt and a 2007wfp at 1680x1050 and I don wonderfully with css and fear combat though when I play those games it isn't at full res. I actually haven't played source with this monitor for a long time (firewalled here at school) but it was ok from what I remember. Fear runs and looks great at a lower resolution too.

I just thought of a different configuration...

What if I sacrifice 2 inches and go with the Samsung 204BW and get an X1900GT, which can be had for $125 after a rebate?

I have around $350-$400 to spend.

Is the extra 2" worth it? I know going from 17" to 19" was a huge jump for me.

imo the GT would handle it much better, but you'd still have to turn down your settings. should be much more usable than a 6800GS tho.

i'm assuming you have pci-e (the GT doesn't come in AGP), so you might even consider waiting 6-8 weeks to see how the nvidia midrange offerings perform. you'll likely find the midrange 8xxx series hardware will outperform the x19xx series, offering you much better value for the $...
