What is the lowest end video card that supports that res? No gaming what so ever, just need to be able to display a Windows desktop. My buddy has an FX5200, he says it won't do it (I thought it would?). Any other suggestions? DVI would be nice too.

Thanks

Any card.

His will do it if it were connected to a monitor that supported that resolution.

Hmm, I am sure I have seen people with a FX5200 that had that res. Probably will work as long as the cable was single link DVI. If its dual link DVI cable then you will need a diff card.

Did your friend update his video drivers, add the monitors INF file, or try forcing the resolution using power strip or the NVIDIA control panel? I get a few calls about people who can't get that res with an FX5200, but I also get some calls where people can. I am guessing it's hit or miss with low end cards.

I know he updated the vid card drivers, I suggested that as well. :) I told him to install the monitor drivers. He said he tried to force the res, but the the screen went blank.

Thanks guys.

The FX5200 spec sheet says no-go on 1680x1050.

quote: "DVI support for compatibility with nextgeneration flat panel displays with resolutions up to and including 1600×1200"

Updated drivers and tried forcing it with the nvidia control panel and I just get a blank screen.

The only gaming is my son's Zoo Tycoon but we do watch movies on it quite a bit.

Edit: Acer 22" AL2216WBD if it matters.

I'm pretty sure that any current card will support it. I'd pick up the cheapest Geforce 7xxx series card you can find and give it a try.

Try setting the refresh rate to 60 if you haven't already. All I know is that my lcd supports 75hz if its at a lower resolution but at higher ones, its restricted to 60 for some reason.

I haven't tried VGA. I will give that a shot and see if vga vs dvi is worth the extra resolution.
