Main question:

In XP display properties, regarding the resolution slider, are the available resolutions a function of the monitor inf files or also the video card drivers?

I bought a ViewSonic VG2030wm for the office and I can't seem to find a computer to match it with. Nothing seems to do the native res of 1680 * 1050. I'm using latest drivers (monitor, and vid cards). The Display Properities show the model of monitor I'm using. Tech support thought it was a limitation of the video cards I was trying to use. It seems like their should be a workaround for this somehow.

TIA

I always thought the monitor.inf file. I setup a 19" LCD the other day that has 1440x900 resolution to a Dell with onboard video and after installing the .inf file, the max res. on the slider in XP was 1440x900.

It's usually dependent on the monitor.inf I believe.

If you are having trouble selecting a certain resolution you can uncheck the box that says "Hide resolutions my monitor can't display" or something along those lines.

just try plugging the monitor in. usually the computer will then give you the proper resolutions, without any drivers to install.

edit: looks like you've already tried that. sorry, no more suggestions for me.

I don't have access to one of the laptops, but it is an HP tc4400 tablet. 945GM sounds familiar.

I think I found my problem with the 945GM chipset. I have a Cingular PC card modem that I just uninstalled, and the resolution started working right away. Strange...

I work at a PC shop, and can vouch for the Cingular software being *horrible*. Particularly offensive is how it tries to take over your WiFi management by default resulting in major problems with many newer adapters.

Sometimes a graphics board can't support that res. For instance my HP NC6000 won't run my Samsung 225 @ 1880*1050.

Not related to resolution, but yes, ALL cellular access card software is HORRIBLE. I haven't had any good experience with either Verizon or Cingular's.
