Ok, so I have my Time Warner Cable bill setup for autopay. Monthly bill is $137. Bank of America sent me a new debit card a couple weeks ago because they said there had been a potential fraud issue. Unbeknownst to me I had linked my TWC bill to my debit card instead of my checking account like all my other bills. I catch this mistake a few days after the bill was due, and manually make the payment online.

Just got my new bill for next month and it is $300. At first I thought the manual payment had not gone through properly until I read through the bill:

Credits/fees
05/18 Credit Card Payment Rejection or Denial 81.02
05/18 Credit Card Payment Rejection or Denial 56.04
05/18 Returned Payment Fee 25.00
Total credits/fees $162.06

How the F*CK do I get charged $162 for ONE rejected payment? Is that typical? I have never heard of such an absurd fee for such an offense.

You sure you're reading that right? Those first two payments look like the amounts they tried to charge, and the $25 looks like the fee. That amount would be typical.

If that were the case, why was my checking account debited for $137 and then the $162 as well on the same day? I wasn't a month late on my payment, it was 4 days late.

Edit:

Nevermind, now my account page is showing a balance of $0. Apparently they debited the bill that wasn't due until next month already. They'll still get a phone call from me about that. I've never been late with a payment to them before, and if they are going to collect my bill a month early, they should return the returned fee they charged me.

I think the fee is only $25... your last month's amount of $137 + 25 + $137 for this month = $300 Or it could be for next month.. I think cable companies charge a month ahead (FIOS does)

Automatic payments are the spawn of the devil. If you are too busy to spend a half hour every month reviewing and paying your bills either reevaluate your life and priorities or hire a personal assistant.

Even if the fee is only $25, that's $25 totally wasted.

Call them, explain the situation, be courteous but firm, and make them remove the $25 charge like an adult.

Unfortunately this.

If your time is so valuable then a couple hundred dollars of fees/etc every other month or so from auto payments gone bad (or from hiring someone to do it for you) are chump change. If not, do it manually on a set date every month. Put it on your calendar, it takes an hour tops.

You should have just first called before running to ATOT to post about it.

Ack, just did this except by some horrible twist of fate I updated the credit card on my autopay plan the night prior a payment being made. TWC first cancels your old autopay, then creates a new one that isn't effective until the next billing cycle so you need to make the first payment as a manual one time transaction.

Call and CS should be able to sort it out.

You know the weird thing, I've gotten a new card 3 times now from AMEX because of fraud issues and my auto pay to Time Warner still goes through.

The $25 was for the returned payment. The rest of the fee was for not being able to actually read your bill.

QFT, it's not a merchant's fault if you need a new debit card. I have had to get new cards quite a few time due to my heavy travel...sucks when you forget a linked account, but not their fault.

Rule #1 for people like OP - Just because you receive a bill with your name on it.... Does not mean you owe it.

Durka durka. Don't pay it. Laugh at them. If they send collections or give you a ding on your credit just challenge it and it will be gone. Of course... try to reason with them first... with things like "...When it doesn't work the first time, who the fuck said try again?"

Me too, but with my Mastercard. Evidently my bank is smart enough to fix the accounts when they issue a new card to me. Never had a payment problem.

Yup. He's doing it wrong.

I'll take "the time" to argue about $5 let alone "A couple hundred". It's the concept, not the money. If you throw away "A couple hundred" as people walk all over you, I guarantee you're living one shit life destined to never retire.

I've never had a problem with auto payments.

I use automatic payments for things that don't change and are inevitable - Gas, utilities, water bill, energy bill, etc...

If for some reason my credit card doesn't go through (which has happened before), they usually send me a notice in the mail to call them and have it changed/updated. Not once have they EVER tried to charge a late fee with it....
