Hi All

I have a 4U rackmount server case. In the front it has a 160mm intake fan... IT IS NOISY... really really noisy... its like having a dremel going at full tilt.

Right now i have it disabled and CPU/Mobo temp is stable at 35/40C for a Duron 1Ghz CPU.

My question is, I still want to have a front intake fan, however I doubt there are many 160mm "whisper quiet" fans commercially available. 120mm wont fit with out some sort of adapter/bracket... maybe two 80mm might do the trick somehow perhaps glued on or somthing. I really dont want to put alot of work into this.

Anyways my other question in my quest to quiten down the systems is the Power Supply fan... right now there is some crappy older 300 watt PS that is quite loud as well. I can get 2 "quiet" power supplies from my standard computer supplier

they are:

Enermax 350w Whisper Dual Fan w/Fan Control -85 (CDN)
Chieftec 300W "Ultra Quiet" - 59

i really dont need dual fan control but i will get it if it is quietier than the chieftec.

any first hand opinions on those 2 PS' ?

i don't have any first-hande experience with those PSUs or that case, but instead of buying ne PSUs, you might replace the fans inside with Panaflos. This is a pretty simple and quick mod that would cost you much less than two new units and be very quiet. For the 160mm fan, I don't think I've seen those except in electronics catalogs. What you might consider, is using a 120mm fan, and suspending it from the corners with some sort of rubber mounting. Even rubber bands would work. I know this doesn't sound really professional looking, but by having the fan susupended, that would separate it from the case and eliminate any vibration that it might transfer to the case thus making it even quieter.

4 80s sound good to me too. You could pretty much use electrical tape to hold them together in a square. :D

As an alternative, you could try grounding your 160mm fan to the +5V line from the PSU, which is the red one in a standard 4-pin drive connector. This reduces its effective voltage to 7V and should cut the noise quite a bit.
