160GB Maxtor - Disk I/O Error: Status = 00000100

My new 160GB Maxtor hard drive gives me the following error when I try to install Win2K. I get the error immediately after it reads the first boot disk, then after the first reboot. It then hangs with the same error message. My BIOS recognizes the drive as 163.3 GB. Any ideas?

Disk I/O Error: Status = 00000100
Failed to ArcRead the boot partition to check for a signature

Unless your CD has SP3 (might work with lower service packs...but Im not sure which number so I chose sp3) or higher...you wont be able to partition a drive bigger than 137gb and format it during install.
Youll have to install on a smaller partition....say 30gb, install SP4 and then use Partition Magic to expand it to the full size...

I did just do a 2k install on a Maxtor 160gb drive...but the drive was already partitioned in 2000...I just formatted it during install...maybe that will work for you as well....first thing I did though after the install was the service pack 4.

Good luck!

I tried 137GB, 30GB, no dice. I still get the same error. The drive works in Win2K as a slave, but it won't let me install W2K on it.

Maybe try deleting all the partitions in DOS as well as FDISK /mbr and then make a 30 GB FAT32 partition and format it as FAT32 adn then try booting form the 2000 CD and installing onto that partition..

Are you OC'g while trying to install?

I tried creating a new MBR with the MaxBlast software that came with the drive. I can try fdisk as well.

I am also not o'cing.

Won't boot from the CD, but I think that is not causing the problem. I have installed from the floppies before on my 30GB IBM drive.

hmmm, Im out of ideas....did you get an ATA133 card with the drive...maybe the install will work if you try the ATA card...
