160GB hard disk, only 131 available for format by win 2000 pro

Hi,

I have added a 160gb hard disk to my windows 2000 pro system. When win setup asks to partition the drive it allows a maximum of 131gb. I dont seem able to add another partition for the rest.

Any ideas.

Yea, that would be the best idea..... update the firmware because really it shouldn't have anything to do with the OS as far a recognizing the drive.

Not completely true. I dont think Windows 2000 will support a drive that big unless you have Service Pack 4. Im not sure on the exact SP.

You need to install SP4 (SP2 might be enough) to see all the space. You'll also have to change a registry setting to enable support for the 48bit lba.

If you don't have a slipstreamed copy, just create a 10gig or so OS partition for now, then install SP4 enable the registry setting and then format the drive.

You dont have to reformat the drive, you can resize it with Partition Magic or a similar program.
