160G SATA HDD showing up as 130G !!! ?????

Hey everyone,

Im a noob on these forums, but ive been referred by a friend to post my HDD issue. I bought a 160G SATA HDD today, installed win XP pro on it and it only recognised it as a 131G HDD. Is this correct or do I need a motherboard drivers update so my 160G HDD shows up as a 160G ??

The motherboard ive got is a ASUS P4C800 deluxe.

thanks!

Anthrax has it - I'm not sure of Asus has a new BIOS update that will correct that problem. In the meantime - use your 130 GB and maybe someday you can grow into the other 50. 🙂

I think all SATA controllers support 48-bit LBA from the get go. They should at any rate. The problem probably is with Windows. Are you using service pack 1? If not, why not? SP1 enables 48-bit LBA and fixes dozens of other problems and issues. Also Microsoft has the answer and instructions.

to go along with this, if i was to build a new computer and make a raid 0(?) array of 2 200gb HDs, how would i do it? You cant install windows with sp1..

Thank you all! Im going to check out the microsoft website for the updates. Wish me luck!

I will let you know if it works

thanks!

Actually is there a separate update from the service pack 1 install ? I dont really want to install that as I have heard bad things happen when installing it.

thanks

Unless you're using a warez OS, it should work just fine. If you are using a warez OS, please pay more attention to copyright and correct the issue.

SP1 is time-tested and proven by millions of people. It's OK.

Actually, there were lots of reports of people taking a big performance hit after installing XP SP1, so much so that MS even at one point released a patch to correct it. The patch was not publicized and was subsequently pulled entirely. Personally, I never had an issue and would advise everyone to install SP1, I was just pointing out that saying it's 100% good is not entirely correct.

I just built a new PC - XP2800+ 512M 4x160G sata using the onboard RAID on a DFI motherboard.

When booting for the first time I created my 600 or so gig RAID-0 drive then I started the Windows XP Pro install from CD and told it I had a driver for my controller, that was that, one bigass C: drive of 600 some gigs, no muss no fuss.

so you didnt need sp1 for the raid array to show up as 600mb? what about that 48bit stuff people are talking about

Actually you might be thinking about the ever famous Q811493 update
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=819634

SYMPTOMS
You may experience slower computer performance after you install the 811493 (MS03-013) security update package on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), or after you upgrade to SP1 on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer where the 811493 security update was previously installed.

I do remember this being a very big issue at one point, and it might be exactly what you're thinking of.

No reason not to patch to SP1 at this point, it's been around for ages, and of course some of the latest critical updates may require SP1 as well.

Actually it would be dangerous not to install the updates. Hackers and viruses can find weak points in your OS. Microsoft makes updates to correct these weak points. Without them your system is vunerable.

plus if you are worried about having a warez copy of XP, you shouldnt worry because SP1 only checks for the most common key used i beleive. SP2.. THEN you will be screwed
