I'm looking for video card which should be able to output 1600x1200 from DVI and have good 2D-performance (2D-quality is always good from DVI, right?). Any suggestion, Radeon 7500 maybe? Or would even 7000 do, it's cheaper? Thanks!

Isn't DVI limited to 1280x1024 unless they are implementing a proprietary solution? I think DVI can only do 1280x1024 because of signaling issues.

DVI is limited to 165 MHz, which is enough for 1600x1200 at 60 Hz (remember, refresh rate doesn't exist and thus doesn't matter with LCDs). Then there's the option of going dual channel (which none of the consumer cards implement) which obviously doubles the data rate.

Yup I was wrong, I should have looked it up first. Many cards are limited to 1280x1024 because of the quality of components they use for transmitting the digital signal. In fact as I was typing this I noticed there is a faq on anandtech about DVI. It says it can handle up to 1920x1080 res (1080i) at 60Hz. Like pete said if they used two transmitters instead of one they could increase this higher. The main reason the res is limited to 1280x1024 is that there are very few panels that use the higher res. Most anything a normal consumer would buy, up to 19", has a max res of 1280x1024 anyways. here...

ATI 2d quality is better than nivdias, but with DVI, they look pretty much the same to me. I don't know if the 7000 or 7500 go up to a higher res, because my panel only goes to 1280x1024.

ATi's DVI stuff is advertized as 165 MHz single channel, no matter which one from 7000 aka VE to 9700pro.

Would you have any idea of 2D-performance, is there any difference because of e.g. higher core speed?

I noticed a huge increase in 2D performance in all applications going from a S3 Trio3D/2X to a Nvidia TNT2 years ago, but all of my video card upgrades after that have not seemed to help much with 2D performance. If you're talking about PowerPoint-style 2D performance, it is my impression that the CPU matters more in that area than the video card does.

Gainward makes a GF4 with dual DVI-I outputs. It works fine with two digital flat-panels, both at 1600x1200.
The same is true of the Matrox Parhelia.
