1600x1024 possible in Half-Life with GF3?

I just got a VisionTek GF3... In Half-Life the OpenGL resolutions only go up to 1280, but I'm sure I've read about people running it higher than that. I did a search and couldn't find anything relevant.

Does anyone know how to run HL higher than 1280x1024? Since this problem might come up in other games, is there a preferred way to force resolutions higher than the ones given to you in the game menus? Thanks.

Some games limit their available resolutions to those supported by your monitor. If your monitor profile doesn't allow any higher those resolutions will not appear.

I dont know if Half-Life also obeys this rule.

Yeah, some games lock the resolution because the textures would look pathetic if upped that high, sorta like a nintendo 64 game in emulation or one of those final fantasy ports.

That's the limit on that particular game unless some has a hack or something.

Still amazes me that Half-Life uses the quake ONE engine...
yes I am well aware it was modified, but man those programmers can work wonders.

It would be nice to find a hack that ups HL's resolution. At 1280, the screen is squashed horizontally, with a couple inches of blank space on either side. I could stretch the screen every time I want to play the game via my monitor's OSD, but that would be a pain. I would probably have to un-stretch it once I quit the game, as well.

I played Quake3 Arena last night in 1600x1200@32bpp. Nice. :D

I just run Half-Life / Counterstrike at 1280x960 with quincunx FSAA on, and the framerate stays locked at the refresh rate and never slows down even in big games.

MysticLlama: What video card do you have? With my GF3 I'm only seeing ~40-70FPS (usually the toward the lower end of the range) at 1280x960 -- even with no AA. :( My desktop is at 85hz... Should I disable or enable vsync?

cleritas, I get a constant 85fps in Half-Life at 1280x1024 with my Geforce2. What's the rest of your system like?

uhh..... it is my understanding that Counter-strike uses a highly modified Quake 2 engine(?)

Epox EP-8K7A AMD761 mainboard
AXIA Athlon Tbird 1.2@1.4 (140x10)
512MB PC2100 Crucial DDR RAM
60GB Maxtor 7200RPM ATA100 HDD
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
Netgear FA312 10/100 NIC
Windows 2000 Pro SP2

I've installed the 4in1's, AMD AGP miniport, Nvidia 12.41's, 12.60's etc. My HL client is v1106, and my dedicated server on the same HDD is v4106 -- I've reinstalled both of them a couple times and get similar FPS. As I said in another thread, on the top of the DOS dedicated server screen, it went from reading 90+FPS with a TNT1 video card installed in the PC to ~60FPS after installing the GF3 (that was the only thing that changed). Why would the video card make a difference in a dedicated server game that you're not even playing in? Hmm.

Well first off, you should not be using the 4in1s with an AMD chipset. If that motherboard has a VIA southbridge you should only be installing the VIA USB and IDE drivers not the whole 4in1's package, and the AMD AGP drivers. If it has an AMD southbridge then you shouldn't be installing ANY VIA drivers. Also make sure 4x FSAA is not enabled in the driver options. As a last thing you might want to reinstall Win2k. This shouldn't really be a problem going from a TNT to a GF3 (not too sure as I never have), but I know it is going from 3dfx/ATI to Geforce cards. I can't really think of any other reasons your system would be running H-L that slow.

Half-life uses a heavily modified quake1 engine, I got into a fight about this before. Here's the proof. Planet Half-life , scroll down to the half-life technology section.

I installed just the IDE driver from the Via 4in1's, the USB filter, and AMD's AGP miniport. Is the AMD761 686B North or South? Using Nvidia 12.60's, under my GF3 settings when I click manual, everything beneath it (2x, 4x, QAA, etc.) is still grayed out -- so I think I'm running with no AA. Is this a known issue? I installed NvMax and RivaTuner, but haven't changed anything yet. Assuming I pick QAA, etc. how can I confirm the current mode? Is there any other way to do it besides going into a game and checking curves/angles, etc.? I've reinstalled Win2k a couple times as well as HL...

Quake 3 Arena does seem a bit faster at 1600x1200@32bpp than HL does at 1280x960. I'll test its FPS tonight... It's rather counter-intuitive to think that my GF3 is actually causing a HL performance hit, resulting in lower than GF2 or even TNT2 FPS. You think/hope that a really fast card would simply peg an "older" game close to its highest setting (100FPS for HL I think).

For one thing: you can't see what the other people type c'os the writing is SOOO small!!
FPS drags arse.. Do you get a wider view of the area ..or ??? Or is it you guys have like 21" monitors? Curious.. plz explain. thnx

haven't seen anyone running that resolution with any monitor. Would be all distorted and stuff. Of course it is your computer and eyes, so what ever floats your boat, tickles your pickle, etc.

Like I said, Q3A looks great to me at 1600x1200@32bpp, so I was hoping HL would too. It's too old, I guess. I doubt HL Blue Shift will be any different. :(

I'm looking forward to Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Duke Nukem "When Its Done" Forever, among other games. I remember Wolfenstein on the C64. The shouting SS guards always gave me a jolt.
