1600 mode on a Dell 2001 = Native?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like my PC can play games at 1600 x 1200 that it shouldn't? I'm running a 9800Pro (DVI to the 2001) and a mobile 2600 OC'd to 2.2 GHz, with 1-G ram. I've played all the new games on this non-cutting edge system with no probs (D3, FarCry, HL2, etc.). Admittedly I'm not maxing out the settings, but they're not set below Med-High either.

Is having the LCD at a native 1600 x 1200 mode easier on the system? I think I tried a lower rez by accident once and it ran like crap, but 1600 is always smooth! Not complaining, just want to know why?

9800 pro runs HL2 no probs. I get 55fps in CS:S on average. Almost never dips below 30 ever. This is at 16x12 of course with no AA or AF, everything else on High.
