1600+ AROIA 0225 "9" Owners- Reply Within

I got my 1600+ from Newegg today, and I have a couple of questions. I was lucky enough to get an AROIA core, and someone told me that the week on mine (25) is supposed to be very good as far as OCing potential. Is that true? Additionally, if anyone could give me some links to sites with good information on the XP cores and how to read what's on them, I'd appreciate it. 🙂

EDIT- Changed title to attract more people with the same chip to post their OCing results.

MrTux,

I got the same stepping and week as you (from newegg a couple days ago):

AROIA 0225
9xxxxxx

However, after actively search through the Overclockers forum and the 500+ posts thread here @ anandtech, I couldn't find any reference on the Overclockability of Week 25 AROIA-9 or other ppl who has results for this chip. Apparently, it's too new in the market for ppl to post their results. If anyone has results with this stepping and week, PLEASE give us some feedback on your results so we can guesstimate how much headroom this chip will give us.

I did a few experiment myself last night with my new EPOX 8k5a2+, but with not too impressive results (compared to the other AGOIA owner on the board). I was able to boot to windows @10.5x166 @ default voltage, but the system will become unstable and shut down after running a few applications. Increased the voltage to 1.8v and everything seems fine, except I can never get Prime95 to even complete 1 loop (the first calculation already gives an error) even when I increased my vcore to 1.95v!!

with 1.85v, I was able to boot @ 10.5x169, but can never get into windows. Tried to increased voltage up to 2.0v, and the system wouldn't boot at all.

Now, there can be a few factors which effect my OC:

1) I have heard that the EPOX 8k5a2+'s northbridge is not sufficiently cooled by the unevenly attached heatsink, I will go ahread and replace it with a active cooler tonight and see if I get better results;
2) I am only using a SVC GC68 with a 50CFM fan, the heatsink could be insufficient to cool my cpu even with a 50CFM fan, and therefore create instability while running prime95;
3) I also heard that the EPOX board has a 5V power line problem with the ATX connector where the 5v line drops to like 4.8v or below at the mosfet voltage regulator and therefore only supplying that voltage to the CPU, I will monitor my 5v line tonight to make sure it doesn't drop too much.

Any comments? BTW, I am using a stick of PC3200 XMS Corsair 512mb ram and a future 400W Power supply.

Pepsimanz: I assume you haven't unlocked it. If I do any overclocking, multiplier is going to be my chief method of doing so. Hopefully these week 25 chips, being new and all, will turn out to have a lot of headroom. 🙂

Actually, I will be unlocking this chip in the future as I planned to move this chip to a MP DUAL amd mb which doesn't support FSB Ocing.

But for now, I would like the chip to run a 166FSB on my current board.

As you might already know, a faster FSB always gives a faster system, and since my epox support a 1/5 divider, everything will be running @ spec. So, there is no need to unlock it unless you want to go faster than 1.74ghz (if you have a 1/5 divider).

I just hope that there are more ppl with this stepping/week, so I can identify if it's the chip that's the bottleneck, or the other three reasons I explained earlier.

BTW, I didn't try any FSB between 133-166mhz, so maybe 166 is just not possible on this chip (or just my chip).

Do you mind posting your results once you unlock it and get it setup?

I'll be more than happy to post results I get from the OC. It just might not be for a couple weeks, since I have to pick up a new board that allows me to change the multiplier. If you have an AIM screen name that you'd like to share, I'd be more likely to remember in a couple of weeks to give you my results. If you don't want to post it in public, just drop me and email (it's in my profile).

MrTux,

Actually, it's the same as my anandtech screen name so, it's already posted in the public=)

But, I don't go on AIM everyday, but I will log on once in a while and look forward to hear about your result.
You can also PM me or email me at "same screen name"@yahoo.com, if you remember.

As I mentioned earlier, I am eventually going to move this to a MPX Dual amd board with another XP1600+ maybe in a couple weeks (when I can get another XP1600+ from my brother) I will be substituting this chip with a XP1700 thoroughbed RevA that I also ordered from Newegg. I might also post my results at the other "1700 thoroughbed" thread in this forum.

Thanks

I just recieved an XP1600+ week 25 also, and am running it at 1600Mhz using the multipliers in my K7s5a. If it is stable for a while at that speed I will try higher.

Good to hear more results from someone.

pISSANt, please post your results if you have time.

just a little update to my previous post,

I did the following last night, but didn't help with my previous OCing results:

1) Change to a 550 Powermax power supply, checked the 5v line and it's constant at 4.94v and above, but still, no stability @ prime @166FSB @ any voltages, so it's not a 5v line problem

2) Updated the newest bios dated (11/1/02) some ppl at Overclockers forum said that the new bios gave him better OCing results and stability, but still no stability @ prime @ 166FSB @ any voltages.

3) Tried sequential FSB between 166 FSB, can got Prime to begin looping up to 163FSB for a few minutes, however, @ 164FSB and above, Prime still fails before finishing one loop (less than 10 secs).

Since this board (8k5a2+) is designed to run 166FSB (1/5 divider available), I will assume that the chipset should be able to handle the 166FSB.

So the only things I could think of that could possibly trouble my OCing is:

1) the Northbridge not being cooled efficiently and therefore crap put @ high FSB. In fact, I took off the northbridge HS (square), and I saw the thermal tape on the heatsink is still intact and barely melted. So maybe the Northbridge gets too hot @ higher FSB. Will replace it with a blue orb active cooler if necessary

2) My SVC GC68 HS with 50CFM fan is not cooling the CPU enough ( I get 38C idle, 43Cload, but as ppl might know, the sensing of CPU temp of this MB is from an external source, therefore, this value is very likely to be at least 10C to 15C lower than actual)

3) The Chip just could not go more than 1.7ghz (10.5x163) stable.

Well, since I have a 1700+ tbred waiting in line to be tested, I will leave this chip alone for now. The tbred is supposed to be factory unlock, so I will go with a lower multiplier to make sure that my MB can run @ 166FSB (maybe I will try 9 or 9.5x)

anyways, just an update to my previous post, any comments are welcome.

Maybe we can change the thread title to "1600+ AROIA 0225 "9" to attract more ppl with this chip to post results.

My XP1500+, agoia 9, 0226 is runnin happily @ 171x10 on stock voltage........havent bothered going higher yet, my watercooling is going in soon 🙂 Different stepping, similar time period? Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky too 🙂

Jeff

damn I got this chip too... still waiting for my mobo to arrive... cmon guys more info on this week 25 aroia would be nice

Well it runs stable at 1600Mhz, but I tried to up the multiplier again for 13x133 and it wouldn't post, so I've either got to up the voltage, or it just won't go much higher. I think the limit for these chips is ~1700Mhz.
