$160 for a 9800SE? Steal or Swindle?

Scoping around Pricewatch.com I've noticed Radeon 9800SE's going for $160(US). I've heard the 9600SE isn't the stud that the 9600Pro is, but how does the 9800SE compare to a 9800Pro? Anyone care to comment? Thanks in advance!

Save $20 and get a 9600 pro instead. For $160 I'm sure the 9800se is the 128 variety, which will be slower than a 9600 pro.

What modedepe said.

Yup, there are 2 versions of the 9800SE ? fti?

9800SE ? 380/340?.256bit bus? $239 ? ? (= 9600pro?s performance)
9800SE ? ? 325/250 ? 128bit bus ?$151 ? (much slower than 9600pro)
PowerColor 9600pro ?400/300 ? ? $145

I would really avoid 9800SE?s (unless I was pretty well guaranteed a softmod to a 9800pro which only the faster 9800SE can do AFAIK.). 9600pro is less expensive, probably consumes 1/2 the power, and is just as fast as the faster version of the 9800SE.

Is the 9600Pro fairly overclockable? I run RageTweak 3D and would probably be looking at using that with the new card. Thanks for the tips!

9600 pro may very well be the best overclockable card ever made. Thats about how good it overclocks 🙂

Here?s a quick rundown on the 9600?s ?

The best 9600 pro?s generally come with 2.8ns rated Samsung memory and cost a little more ~ $170 -180 ?this includes ? Powercolor ?Bravo?, Sapphire 'Fireblade', Gigabyte R96P (R96P128D), FIC, Hercules 3D Prophet, and HIS.

The 9600pro?s around $150 will usually have 3.3ns Samsungs which includes ? the Connect 9600pro, Sapphire, GigaCube, and PowerColor. TYAN Tachyon G9600 PRO 128MB has 3.6ns Hynix.

Built By ATI retail 9600pro?s used to come exclusively with 2.8ns Samsung?s but now I think they are shipping with 3.3ns Samsungs --- they cost about $170 but come with a 3 year warranty (most cards only have 1 year). Finally, Gigacube makes a ? ?Ultimate Extreme Version??of the 9600pro which comes with 2.5ns Samsungs and is clocked 400/365 DDR --- quite a bit faster than the normal 9600 pro?s 400/300. The Gigacube runs about $180.

The 2.8?s don?t seem to overclock (345 - 365) a heck of a lot more than the 3.3 Samsungs (320 - 340). So you can decide if the extra $25 is worth it.
