16 gigs or ram versus 32 for video rendering?

Hello everyone, first post here.

I am building a sytem that will be primarly for video editing and rendering. The core of the system is an intel i5 2550k, Asus z68 gen3 mobo, Samsung 128 ssd, Win7 Ult. Will it benefit me any to have four 8 gig sticks as opposed to four 4 gig sticks of mem? The software I will be using is Sony Vegas Pro 11.

Thanks for your input!

You should know better. The software is the same but requirements differs with different levels of skill of the user and scale of the project. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with either 16GB or 32GB.

Know better? I am a novice, just started working with this and realized my six year old amd system isn't going to get it done. Three minute video took fourty five minutes to render. Thanks for the info!

Then skip the 32GB and get yourself a Core i7 2600K with 16GB of RAM. The extra threads will come in handy.

If you're working on high bitrate, long videos you want lots of horsepower and lots of ram. You also want a fast disk too so don't skimp out on a good ssd or several in a stripe. In addition, depending on what you're going to do, 11 supports some GPU things so if you're looking to do some rendering, that's something to consider.

That said, what ARE you looking to work on?

And what was the bottleneck? CPU probably? HDs definitely slow things down. Pay attention to actual ram usage as well...sometimes things don't uses as much ram as ya think they would...and 32GB could just end up being a big waste.

I guess you should do a little research on the software and what makes it perform the best.

If I were you, I'd get a 2600k instead. The extra 4 threads will help out with video a ton. I would also get 2x 8GB sticks and then upgrade to 32GB later.

If you're a novice and don't think you'll get serious about video editing, then the set up you have now would work. Get a 2500k instead though, its cheaper I believe.

I have been using Vegas Pro for several years on several different platforms.

I have never seen it use over 4g of ram ..

If you are going to be rendering HD, then the most Nvidia Cuda cores you can afford is what you want, because Vegas 11 uses the GPU for rendering HD or Bluray ... At least a 560 Ti - a 570 or 580 would be better ..

For rendering .mpg and other non-HD formats, Vegas 11 really sucks for some reason.. Vegas 10 is much faster ..

But since you are stuck with v11, then the 2600K would be best for that .. At least a mild overclock to 4.2 would help, but the higher the better.

Thanks for all of the help everyone! I will be rendering long HD vid. I got the 2550k for a real good price so I am stuck with that cpu maybe until the i7's come down a bit.

I did some research on Sony Vegas and it does get faster with a better vid card so I am thinking 2x8 sticks like MrX8503 suggested and spend more on the card.

I am thinking the cpu was the bottleneck. When ever I render, the cpu would be 100% the whole time while only using maybe 1-1.2 gigs of my 2 gigs of ram I have now.

Thanks for all of the help everyone. I will let you know how things turn out.

Yes, the CPU was at 100% as that is what is doing all the work to process the video...speeding this up as much as you can is what's going to help those render times the most.

(I'm currently unaware if they have GPUs doing rendering now etc.)

A lot of people don't realize this but if you want 32gb of RAM you'll need Windows 7 Pro or higher. Home Premium only supports up to 16gb. Just thought I'd let you know. Wasn't sure if that would be a problem or not.
