16 gb RAM on system with "limit" of 8 gb!

Hello all,
I have an acer aspire 5750g lappy with 2 slots for memory. The official description of the device says that's the memory is limited to 8 gb (2x 4gb).
My question is, is it possible to upgrade to 2x 8 gb ? And if not, what's limiting the memory to 8 gb?

The CPU supports more. But usually the 8GB is just what they tested with. With another laptop from another maker it was the same, but a friend of mine took the chance and now got 16GB.

However, there is no guarantee it will work.

Ok it works and it shows the whole 16gb of memory BUT the system crashes and restarts alot now.
Any 1 knows whats the best way to underclock the ram or adjust its voltage on a laptop?

People, you're making me crazy!! Please read the thread before replying!
Why would I on earth want to update the BIOS? It will be still LOCKED...
 
You want to update the bios because it may help with memory compatibility. You say it is crashing now, so an update to the latest bios may resolve the crashing.

If it doesn't, then run memtest on your new memory to see if it is possibly faulty. The other factor is that the system may not be stable with 16GB of memory, which is why they put the 8GB limit.
 
Like with others... Check for a BIOS update. If your laptop has a basic RAM test in it's BIOS, run that. Otherwise create a memtest CD and boot off of it.

If it fails the RAM test with 16GB, pull out one stick and test each individually in both sockets, until you can find out what configuration is failing. It can be a long night. You are trying to troubleshoot and simplify. If it still fails or is unstable, oh well for some reason it simply doesn't work... RMA for either a replacement or a refund. Perhaps it's limited to 8GB for that very reason.

What WOULD make a difference is if you have bought a bad RAM stick. The new one won't be fouling things up.

I bought the same brand that was originally installed in the device....
I couldn't run memtest, because thanks to the replies here I updated my BIOS and now i can't boot from usb, cd&dvd or from external hdd and I'm not sure if I can install an older version of the bios...

Anyway, I think the problem was that due to higher frequencies more voltage was needed?

Update:
just realized there's an app other than memtest86 that I can run from within windows, gonna try it and come back with feedback!

The system reboots right after memtest starts testing! Does this mean that the ram sticks are faulty? Or that my system doesn't like 16gb? Or there isn't enough voltage? HOW CAN I TELL??
 
Most likely it doesn't like the 16GB.. put your old memory back in or take out 1 stick at a time and test with just 1 to see if one of them is faulty.

The first 1 caused a system crash after 5 mins. The second 1 is being tested for the last 20 mins but not done yet...
