16 examples of why this man is the best ever in hockey.

Gretsky was better than Lemieux. So were Bobby Orr & Gordie Howe.
Sorry.

edit: oh, and if those were his 16 moments of brilliance, just the second one - the goal off the face off - absolutely pure luck - he wasn't trying to do that; it just happened. That wasn't skill - it was luck.

QFT.

To quote Mike Lange, "You'd have to be here to believe it!" That goal he scored with his stick between his legs was unbelievable.

I don't know if Mario was better than Gretzky, but Gretzky wasn't any better than Mario. Both were so far ahead of anyone else.

A lot of goals in hockey are "luck". 🙂

/agree with the comments about Gretsky, Orr, and Howe - but if you're a shittsburgh fan - I could easily understand why.

Gretzky was the best ever there is no question but I would not compare either to defencemen because its such a different game for them

Forwards
1. Gretzky
2. Lemieux
3. Howe

Defense
1. Orr
2. Lidstrom - hes a damn robot
3. Borque

Goalie
1. Roy
2. Brodeur
3. Hall

Gretzky had the more accomplished career but Lemieux was probably the better player. Apparently some guys did a statistical analysis of Gretzky's and Lemieux' careers (points per game, goals per game) and then adjusted those stats based on the state of the league at the time (average goals per game scored per team, goalies' GAA, etc) and found that Lemieux played in a league that was harder to score in. Leveling it all out, Lemieux was the more prolific scorer.

No doubt that both Lemieux and Gretzky were phenomenal scorers... But personally, I more appreciate players who play defense as well as they play offense.

How does this video player work? It only showed 2 videos then it loops. I don't get it.

The videos are broken up into two game "matches" and you're supposed to vote on which one you prefer. You have to click on another match in the bottom bracket to view more.

Lemieux definitly can take a better shot to the head than Gretzky....

Agreed. but in fairness, Gretzky was never an a-hole on the ice, and was much more of a finesse player.

I'm surprised that no one has raised the possibility of Ovechkin eclipsing all of the previously mentioned players. It is too early in his career to make a judgment of how he will go down amongst the other greats of the game, but there is no denying that he has absolutely incredible skill.

I can see Ovie having the same career as Yzerman. A prolific goal scorer and a true leader of his team, then as age creeps up roll back into a more defensive forward.

In 20 years, Hasek will be remembered as top 3, but if not, he is probably 4.

People forget that Lemieux had a short career and was never at 100%. If he was at 100% and healthy, he'd probably be #2 if not #1. Ovechkin is probably going to be on the top 3 list one day.

Ovechkin doesn't belong in the same debate of greatness just yet. Maybe one of the great goal-scorers when his career is over... Maybe

Orr was the greatest. Everyone knows this.

Ovechkin will never beat Gretzky. I doubt anyone ever will. Relative to the players at his time, Gretzky was probably twice as good as anyone else. Granted the Oilers second line would have been a first line for any other team at the time so oponent defenses were spread thin. So there is a bit of a grey area when talking Gretsky. Especially those years where he was getting 200 points a season.

The thing with Ovechkin is that he is probably 10% better if that than hte next best player. But even the idea of him being the best right now is questionable.

Also, it is adifferent game now. Gretzky would have been nothing today.
