16 drives

Hello,
i had a raid 5 of five 2tb drives no hotspare, that was 65% full. (i sold that pc so the drives/data is in another machine atm. i am considering 3 options, to go to 8 or 16 drives. i have looked at nas boxes, they start around $400 and go to $700 for a decent one. and ones with 5-6 bays are closer to $1000. at that point i would rather build a full fledged pc.
1. cheap case, expensive mobo/raid card(s)/sas expander. something like <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219034">case1</a> plus <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816401184">expander</a> and <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816401188">sas card</a> plus a mobo with 3 pci-e 16 slots.
2. expensive case + cheap raid card something like <a href="http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/3U/836/SC836E26-R1200.cfm">supermicro case</a> and <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358"> raid card</a> plus could recycle a mobe i have currently, upgrade later.
3. other options.

the norco case reviews do not sound so good, bad connectors where the drives slide in, and poor cable management. plusi would ideally like to make this an esxi4 box. run a vm of freenas, cent, and svr08. any suggestions?
