16 bit scanner problem

my friend has an old scanner from his p2 days. he just bought a new asus a7a motherboard and installed every thing new into and found that the scanner card that came with his scanner has no place in the new mobo.
so..
essentially is there any way he can make the scanner work on his new machine (it runs through the card on a serial port) without buying a new scanner?
