The playstation 2 emotion engine is 128 bit right ?

The xbox CPU is a celeron which means its 32 bit ?


How come they can compete with each other ?

I still like the people who benchmark their video cards by the amount of video ram on it. When I ask what do they have in their computer, they always say something on the lines of 'it's 64MB, but I think I'll upgrade to a 128MB card.'

the point or rather question i was asking, is why did it go 16, 32, 64, 128 bit but now stops and goes back to 32 bit celerons, 32 bit G5's?

Actually I've always wondered about this, what exactly does the bit number in consoles refer to? CPU register length? memory space? Bus width to system RAM? Colour precision? What exactly is 8-bits wide in the NES?

Someone told me that Microsoft is coming out with a 32i-bit console, but I think it's just imaginary.

Consoles aren't really measured by *-bits anymore, because it really doesn't apply. Had this arguement with a new guy at work not too long ago, and he keeps saying he can't wait to see the 512-bit consoles. I told him that basically, consoles weren't measured in power by bits anymore since the Nintendo 64. I may have heard some tidbits about the Dreamcast being 128-bit, but that soon died down.

Consoles are a lot more complex these days, with lots of different pieces doing different parts of the puzzle. With each piece varying in strength and function, you can't simply pigeon-hole it to one term anymore. So now, we compare consoles with their generation competition.

becuase the people who write the code for each have one set piece of hardware to work on, not like the pc market that encompasses DX5 up to 9c!

becuase theres one bit of hardware and everyone who buys one gets the same, they can optimize like crazy wihtout fear of being called cheaters by other parties.

the PS2 is just wierd though 128bit cpu @ 300Mhz, then a 16pipe line emotion engine @ 150Mhz fed by 4mb of DRAM on a 2560bit bus (not a typo) cant really perform any kind of AA or AF, but works very well if u cram it full of data. its just a vector processor isnt it?

the dream cast was a phake, they said 128bits, in reality it was 2 64bits wired together i think, not a true 128bit
