16:9 or 16:10 for PC gaming monitor?

Is it worth getting a 16:9 monitor for a PC over a 16:10? Are future games going to be supporting 16:9 resolutions? I am also concerned that 16:9 is too wide for PC gaming and general use. Is this the case?

If you watch movies 16.9 monitor is best choice. If game supports 16.10 it will surely support 16.9.

In general PC use a 4.3 monitor is best choice but the trends have been changing considering PC have been multimedia hubs for quite some time now.

This is completely subjective, but I much prefer 16:10 over 4:3 for general use. You can easily view two documents side by side (type something up in a word processor while reading a pdf, for instance). I'm a lot more productive that way instead of alt tabbing between the two.

16:10 is also better than 16:9 in that respect, since you have more vertical space. It's like having two 8:10 areas, each of which is almost the shape of a page (8.5x11).

It's practically a non issue as far as games are concerned though, since just about any modern game has a wide array of resolution options. The best reason for having a 16:9 monitor is that you can watch 16:9 content without having black bars on the top and bottom.

You like 16:10 over 16:9 because it has more vertical space? Then you went on to say 4:3 monitor suck because it's not as wide?

So which do you like best? A wide or tall monitor?

There isn't much of difference between 1080 vs 1200. 3 extra lines of viewing space on a document but you gain much more with movies and tv shows.

Not only the black bars but 16:9 monitor have much more viewing size when looking at 16:9 material or any movie over 16:10 monitor of equal size.

How does a 16:9 1080p monitor have more viewing size when watching 16:9 material over a 16:10 1080p?

If the monitors are both 24" why wouldn't you?

I have 2 1920 x 1080 monitors. If I need to buy a new one in the future I'd probably go 1920 x 1200. I miss the extra height at times, when viewing photos etc. Not to mention the extra real estate for games and everything else. I like the 1080p resolution, and if you come from a smaller monitor it seems big. But if you have the money go bigger imho.
You're going to have a large percentage of movies showing black bars on either monitor, due to the 2.40:1 that seems to be ever more popular etc.

One thing about 24" 1920x1200 monitor is that you get extra real estate. You get more viewing per inch than comparable 24" 1920x1080 monitors.

A 16:9 image on a 24" monitor is smaller physically than if viewed on a 16:10 24" monitor, is what I was getting at

I like having a 16:9 monitor becasue of the extra width. its great for games because most current and upcoming games are actually designed for 16:9 thanks(or no thanks) to consoles.

I think 16:9 will be definitely be the more common aspect ratio before long. besides 1920x1080 they also make a 2048x1152 monitors and maybe one day we will get a 2560x1440 monitor too.

16:9 1920x1080 at work
16:10 1680x1050

I don't like the 16:9 when working... but in fact the program I use at work would benefit mostly from 4:3 or 5:4 Monitor or dual monitors

My next monitor will still be 16:10 I am sure of that. 16:9 to remove black bars is stupid beacuse tons of movies are shot even wider, so you can never avoid black bars.

1080p on an ATi card on a some directx 10 games = underscan to 1080i.

ATi still haven't fixed this problem yet, games like Far cry 2 and bioshock in dx10 can be fixed if you forced 1080p@60 in the HDTV settings but games like Crysis and STALKER = underscan to 1080i.

beware.

Doesn't that only occur on HDMI? Or tv displays?

Haven't seen that problem and I've run bioshock and crysis at 1080P. Did you confirm that the TV source is 1080i?

OT

IMO FOV while gaming is better with a 16/9 monitor and uses more sceen space when watching movies.
