What's the real advantage of running 15k scsi compared to 10k scsi drives, considering the same tasks are used in each drive. IE. Windows applications, games, video editing. Any input from you guys?

heck, I would really like to know too. I am in the market for some scsi and I have been debating the difference myself. Anyone?

how about pratical use? I would have guessed with the DB because of the access times. but say how about making DVIX or whatnot. and like the occasional mp3 compression.

Thanks!

The system boots faster on my 15K drive than my 10K one. It "feels" faster all the way around the board. Lower seek time, etc. It probably matters WHAT 15K drive compared to WHAT 10K one though. Mine's a Seagate Cheetah(15K) vs Maxtor Atlas IV (10K)

the two I am conpairing are 18g's 15k.3 and the 10k.6

Those are the two latest and greatest seagate Cheetahs

You can look at head to head benchmarks if you'd like, here.

I'll summarize it by saying: The 15K ones kicks the 10K one's trash in every benchmark.

Thanks very much for the post of reviews.. to me they seem fiarly similar. but, those are just #'s. does it feel faster with the 15k.3

lol I have a 18.2g u2w 10k drive so either one would be faster!

All things being equal the 15k is 50% faster than the 10k. It's all a mechanical problem of how fast you are dragging the data past the heads. The difference is not constant because the physical arrangement of sectors and tracks changes from the inner tracks to the outer but you get the idea. It's just like changing the speeds on a reel to reel tape recorder from 3 3/4 to 7 1/2 ips. except that is a 100% change.

I can "feel" the difference. I find it quite amazing at how crisply things move with a 15K Cheetah, even though mine's gen 2 and not gen 3. It's a huge difference when it comes to randomly doing tasks. I'm almost ready to get one for my main system as well (when I can afford it). I have the one in my server, just upgraded from IDE. I can get away with an 18 GB one on that system, but not on my main computer. Once I get the dough I'm definitely going 15K SCSI.

with me... I can get away with 18gb system drive but I will have to have mt 80gig ide backup but remember, it's stinkin 18 gig. damn we are getting spoiled with the amount of HDD space we have. I remember back in the day when I would have to do a MAXIMUM compression on a fat32 drive with win98 minimum install just to get a full install of Quake 2. I had 2 voodoo2's in sli back then and I was on top of the world. 18 gigs is WAY more than enough for a main drive. Concidering a FULL install of slackware 9.1 takes about 6 gigs. and who ever does a full install of a linux distro anyway....

well, I almost got a 15k.3 for $100 but lost it. now I gotta debate on weather to wait for another drive of that price range to appear or I could get a 10k.6 for about $80. both 18 gig.

Thanks for the useful information sideswipe and gang..
