15in portable laptop with VGA in, does it exsist?

Hey,

I am looking for a laptop with a vga input that is 15 inches and very portbale. Basically, I am a student bringing my desktop to college and I would like to abolish the need for a monitor by making my laptop my monitor by connecting the VGA out on my desktop to a VGA in on my notebook.

Is this even possible? I have been searching around for a while with little success, any help would be appreciated.

There is NO laptop that would have a VGA input. Laptop LCDs are inheriently DVI based. Of course most of the time you do not have an external DVI port but it is hardwired directly from the graphics chip/integrated northbridge and to allow for a secondary input would require a lot of extra wiring and likely a switch which laptops already have precious little space. Even if somebody were to allow for an input it would likely be DVI and not VGA. Also remember it would take quite a bit of consious efford to allow this and Hardware OEMs are not likely to setup something like this (they are in it to sell hardware of course).

as long as you dont game, a tv tuner and a tv out on your desktop would work fine. If you game though, there might be lag between the game and the actual image displaying

actually using a video in/out as workaround doesn't work as to what is neededyou will need an expensive videoadapter , that is able to handle 1280x1024/1280x768 or any of those usuall resolutions that your desktop is usually at,

But I think the best bet is to stream video over lan

Two work arounds that may not accomplish at all what you're trying to do, but since you make no mention of specifics, here it is anyways:

1) Use your video out, or buy a video out, for your desktop. Look for a SViDEO type if possible over composite (much sharper). Buy a PCMCIA or USB2 video input or tv-tuner card for your laptop. Attach, and use. Pros: Works as advertised. Cons: Resolution will be lacking, though may be adequate with gaming. USB2 type of tuners usually have a bit of lag in them too.

2) Use Remote desktop on the desktop (winxp pro, not home) to do administration on the desktop if it's going to be a server and thus doesn't really need a monitor on its own. You can also use vnc which is free but somewhat slower than remote desktop. Pros: essentially free and easy to set up (a few minutes is all it takes). Works great for administrative purposes. Cons: Can't do gaming or any type of activity that refreshes the screen at any high speed.

A video output on desktop-->video input on laptop is your only bet. No laptops have a monitor input on them.

An LCD TV Might be nice. Unless you plan on taking notes on your laptop in class this is pretty much useless to take two computers. I imagine most laptops would run out of power before the end of the day. It is a lot of work to lug around a laptop across campus. You better think about this. You will be lugging around books too. It would be like carrying 2 book bags.

OK, to be more clear.

I have an AIW 9700 on my desktop. It has DVI out, s-video out, composite out, VGA ovbiously and i think that covers it. What My goal is, would be to get a 15 in laptop, rather laight with not much processing power, ram, hdd space, ect so I can carry it around to class and such, but when I return to the dorm, connect a video cable of some type to the laptop and use the screen of the laptop for the screen of the desktop.

It would be nice to be able to play games on the desktop, I realize the max res I would get would be the max res of the laptop, and thats best case possible.
