It depends. If you're also submitting a personal statement of your research interests or whatever, then you don't really need one (this is what I did). If you don't need this essay, just include something about how you want to pursue an advanced degree in _______ and study/research in _________ area. Make it sufficiently general that you won't exclude anything the department offers.
