$150k to start a business...have access to Japan.

My dad is just outside retirement. His job ended a couple years ago...he is thinking of starting something and putting $150k into it. Obviously we are not looking at a McDonalds or the like...

Anyone have experience at this level? Both of us are handy with all tools, my brother is a CCIE and can help. Both of us are pretty damn good building and maintaining PC's.

Import stuff from Shonen Jump Store and other Japan exclusive stores, resell here on ebay and custom website. Take advantage of growing japanese culture fandom.
I'm in NY. Give me a job, too.

if i were retired and looking to start a retirement business (does that really make sense?) i would go for something i wouldnt have to work too hard at, as well as being something i like to do. id probably start a cafe or a small diner, so i could just hire kids to do the actual work and hang out all day. making money while hanging out is always fun.

aren't there already a bunch of ebay sellers of that stuff?
i don't keep up with the animu culture. :~

If he's retiring, just take that money and go to a SE Asian country, open up a cafe and buy a house and live there. Or, day trade.

What does "have access to Japan" mean? Pretty much everyone has some level of access to Japan.

his wife is japanese and is living in japan for work at the moment if i'm remembering correctly.

Spend $100,000 on a used Bentley or Rolls Royce. Buy a couple of $5,000 suits and a few semi automatic subs (a taser wouldnt hurt either). Dont forget the brass knuckles.

Recruit female friends to work on commission. Have them post erotic services on craigslist. Vet customers, buy friends tight skirts and redbull, and take 50% cut.

Let your dad sample said services free for life and give him 10% to boot.

Open a sushi restaurant. Eat all profits.

What's your brother's CCIE in?

You don't start a restaurant of any type because you think it's a good investment or, sounds like fun. I can think on NO business with a lower ROI and, 12 hour days isn't most peoples idea of fun.

Da Chef has spoken. So, let it be written. So, let it be done.

probably means you don't have an answer for me.

Probably means you didn't provide a very good level of access. Even knowing that your wife is Japanese and is in Japan right now isn't enough. Where does she live? Who does she know? Obviously you want to include some ideas involving Japan, so providing relavant information might be a prudent idea.

But, if you want to be a smartass, go ahead. I just can't understand why someone looking for help would want to be...

Since you have 150k cash the bank might actually be willing to lend you 1million as I think the rule is that a bank will lend up as much as 1000% of what you have (I may be wrong, but think I recall hearing that somewhere), then open up a Tim Hortons (that's the franchising cost). You will pay off the debt year 1. Year 2 and on is all profit.
