Hey, its nice to be part of this this board.
IM spending arond 1500 on a new system including a moniter.

Il prolly build it or buy it from BuyAbs.com Or Cyberppowerpc.com

my dad wants me to get a refurbed dell pentium 4... but those systmes must be real unstable i was playing around with a p4 is comp usa and it kept bugging on me. I just want a fast amd system that will last 3 years , and will lend it self open to upgrade to possibly extend that lifetime. I dont play much games , but im lookin forward to tribes 2 and Tf2 so i want a decent vid card. sumthin for 150 ish. I like sound but nethin nice will do paired with sum good speakers at least 4 point, and 5.1 support. I want a nice moniter, the pf790 really interested me as being a nice moniter. Also is Tv playback good on pcs ?? im considering that as well cuz mytv is like 16 inches in and its old. However i really dont wanna go with a Ati card but wutever im sure u guys know more than me. Thanks in advance. :)

you could get a p4 but for 1500 you will get nothing with it. I think I would get a Thunderbird with ddr ram probably the asus a7m266 with 256 mg pc2100 then a high end geforce2. This will allow you to run fast have upgrade value and do whatever the h*ll you want

I say wait for another 3~4 months, cu'z DDR-RAM will become cheaper. Therefore, you can concentrate your budget on other things.

Fire ... Check out both unitedmicro.com and monarchcomputers.com. Both sites allow full customization and very good prices. This will give you the best opportunity to see where you want to put your money, i.e. DDR system vs. great video cards, large drives, etc.

You can't base stability on a PC that is on display many people purposely mess with them as a joke. I'm guilty of this myself ;).
You can build a nice P4 for 1500. with monitor and the works if you shop around for the parts. Use a Asus P4T Motherboard and buy a 1.4 GHZ and your almost garrenteed to run at 1.6 to 1.7 GHZ and have complete stability. If you ask others that have these systems like myself, GMTB , floster , Frustrated1 among a few they will all tell you that the stabilty is amazing and the speed is awesome. Don't listen to people that don't own the platform. They should only comment on there own experience with whatever system they have.
In my oppinion the P4 is the only way to go.

Many will tell you the current P4 platform is a dead end. I say that every platform is a dead end. Most users end up buying new motherboards after there current system becomes to slow for current apps anyways. A 1.6 GHZ P4 will run software way into the future and really won't require upgrading for at least 2 years for most users.

Good luck on your new system no matter what you decide
