Woo Hoo!

I received my rebate check from the EPA for $150.

I turned in my old non-functioning lawn mower and received a voucher to fill out for a new electric lawn mower. I went and purchased an electric lawn mower and then sent in the paperwork. I promptly received my check back from the government.

The EPA has been running this program every year in the summer months. Look for this in your area next year.

So how is the quality of the electric mower? Does it cut just as well?

You'd better invest that $150 in extension cords and rubber gloves.

You must also live in a part of the country with girlie-like grass :) St. Augustine grass would mean certain death to any electric mower.

Definitely not true. I live in the Houston area where all lawns are St. Augustine, and I used an electric lawn mower for 9 years. One mower, 9 years, no gas, no oil changes, no tune-ups. All I had to do was plug it in and mow. Oh, and I did sharpen the blade occassionally. After 9 years, the wheels were about ready to fall off, but the motor was still running like new.

Not necessarilly. I have a Black and Decker cordless electric mower and it cuts St. Augistine just fine. The cordless mower runs off 2 sealed motorcycle batts and has decent power. B&D says it is equivalent to a 5 hp gas, but I doubt that.
It doesn't spin the blade as fast as a gas, so it doesn't cut quite as completely as a gas will, missing an occasional blade here and there. My mower can cut my lawn twice on one charge.
I had an electric with it cord, and it really isn't that bad. Same power if not more than my cordless and if you cut away from the place where you have plugged the cord in, you don't tangle with it much. You get used to the quiet and no fumes. I got a cordless cuz I have a good amt of trees that would be frustrating to deal with when using a cord.
No gas, no tune ups, no mess. I am sold on electric mowers as long as I have a smallish yard.
Oh and electrics with cords are much lighter than any gas mower.
My rechargable is about the same weight as a gas due to the batteries made of lead and water...

Does EXISTING owners of electric mowers qualify for this rebate ?

I am a happy owner of a B&D cordless mower too. Our lawn is about medium sized, and the mower easily finishes the whole lawn in a full charge (unless the grass is wet).

Dammit. I just bought a new mower this spring. I was looking at the 'letrics, but didn't know anybody who owns one. Sounds like a winner to me.
