I never gave any of my 3 kids an allowance. I told them if they wanted something or needed money to tell my wife and I what it was and we would talk about it. Occasionally I would slip them a few bucks as they got older if they were going to be out and about with friends.

They all got part time jobs when they were old enough, and worked in our family business as young as age 12 before that. I think the family business was the biggest factor, since they saw first hand how much hard work goes into making a living.

They took a lot of pride in working for their money and spending it wisely. Last month my bandwidth addicted daughter didn't have enough money to buy an unlimited data card for her phone. She bought the 5GB plan instead, which for her is a borderline hardship. She could have asked me for the extra $10 and I would have given it to her, but she didn't even think to. At 17 she is starting to learn to live within her means and I am happy as can be.

My other two are older and out of the house, but have similar financial smarts, though the oldest one occasionally needs a reminder.

And, yes, I'm bragging a bit.

I wonder how many other middle and upper class kids are spoiled rotten these days?

Less than $2500 allowance? Been there man. I'm trying to think of how old I was before I cleared $2500/mo. That's around $21/hr, so I was maybe 30?

Wtf a lot of you got allowance and your parents bought you a car as a kid?

I never got allowance as a kid, why is paying a kid to do chores around the house considered normal? Unless you're paying rent you should be doing that kind of stuff anyways. I had to work if I needed anything, and bought my first car myself.

I think its a good way to help teach kids about money. Research shows they start forming opinions and habits as early as 5 so its not like theyd be able to get a job someplace else to start learning about it

I got an allowance, albeit I admit I was rather spoiled. Mine was more in the ballpark of $10-20/week though.

It depends though, I mean - Allowance could overall be cheaper. For example, if kids needed clothes and they don't get an allowance, it usually means that the parent just buys them clothes. However, if you give your kid an allowance you can always respond with "Well, better save up your allowance" and not buy them things on a whim.

I never gave my daughter an allowance. If she wanted something, she'd ask for it, and more likely than not, I'd get it for her. She never asked for much. Usually, it was me pushing stuff on her. We'd go to flea markets/thrift stores, and I'd see something cool or useful, then ask her if she wanted it. I like finding the cheap treasures, and having her around doubled my chances for finding good stuff.

Werd. Never got an allowance or a vehicle.

This just goes to show you most kids really are spoiled these days.

We were poor but I think I was spoiled relative to our income. I think my mother felt guilty we were all alone out in rural farm country with no one to play with and she was working three jobs to support the two of us, so even when she was home she was either eating or sleeping. She must have felt bad she didn't have more time for me herself, hence she would get me all the game systems and most of the video games I wanted. We didn't always get what I wanted right when I saw it, but we usually did eventually. I know she rarely ever got anything for herself. I think a good day for her was getting her three cups of coffee a day and maybe a home deli sausage sub on Saturdays if she was lucky.
