I'm starting to read some books, but was curios about a fileserver, I want to have a server based network (I get to be SysAdmin :)), and i was wondering what's a good operating system to use for that. I have Win2K Pro and WinNT4, but I'm sure I could get Win2K server if that would be better.

For a server, is there any problem with roughly a kt7a-raid with like a T-bird800, 256MB ram? There will probably be a bit of gaming going on.

For the connections, I guess Switches rather than hubs are the way to go. now the max length on UTP is 100m I believe, what's the furthest distance a computer can be from the computer by way of User--->switch---->switch---->server, how far away?

THanks!

With Win NT Workstation and 2k Pro, you are limited to 10 connections to the computer at one time. This is for file access only. I do no think this limit applies to computers that are accessing the server for something like shared Internet access. Your server looks fine for what you want to do. When you said that gaming would be going on did you mean that you were going to be runing a server with that machine. If so, you may want to add some more memory depending on how many users will be playing off the server. This should not be too much of a problem with how cheap memory is now. As for a getting started guide, I can't really help you there.
