be warned, Halo PC does not run so hot

From: http://www.gamespy.com/reviews/september03/halopc/

But the biggest problem with the graphics -- and the entire game, for that matter -- is that you'll need a pretty powerful PC to run Halo at a steady clip. My main machine is a P2.54 GHz P4 with a GeForce 4 and 1GB of RAM, and I've been running new releases like TRON 2.0, Jedi Academy and Call of Duty at 1024x768 without so much as a stutter -- and that's with all the eye candy cranked up. But even at 800x600 with some of the details turned down, Halo still feels sluggish -- disappointing for a game that looked fantastic and ran fairly well on the Xbox two years ago.

And you may need to lower the graphics settings on the PC version to get a sufficient framerate. While the Xbox version had the occasional stutter here and there, the PC version seems much less reliable. We've tested the game on a range of systems. The one I've used the most is a 2.4GHz machine with a GeForce 4. At that level, I was able to play with all the details up at 800x600 fairly smoothly. I can get comparable performance at slightly higher resolutions by dropping the texture detail and shadows. But with everything turned all the way up at 1600x1200, we still had noticeable (but not completely aggravating) choppiness on our dual 3GHz machines with the new GeForce and Radeon cards.

Damn shame, I expect Gearbox is gonna be in a world of hurt when this game hits the shelves. Lots of returns on this one I bet. Also, I miss the days when releasing demos was a standard for PC gaming.

CtlAltl33t, take into consideration that Gamespy and IGN were probably reporting on the Press Release Beta. I skimmed both articles and didn't see anything that said they were playing the retail version. I've experienced the 1.5 Beta on a P4 2.4GHz, 512MB PC2700, Radeon 9500Pro and WinXP. It was a bit choppy. Lowering the resolution and disabling the eye candy didn't help. This is a good indication that the code was to blame, not weak hardware. Once AA was disabled it smoothed out and play was resumed at 1280x960 with all the goodies on. I'll reserve judgement until I have the final product installed and running tomorrow night. As for a demo, Gearbox has stated that it will be available after the game's release.

This can't be good... My computer barely meet the minimum specs for Halo. I've been pushing upgrading to an Athlon 64 until the summer.

I think my computer meets the requirements for halo. The beta edition was rather choppy. So I wouldn't base the beta results with the final results.
