I'd buy a ton of cheap houses and just keep them for the land.

Would any of you have a problem if a rich investor bought multiple blocks worth of houses/land and turned it into a gated private community?

There are already rich people who can afford to do that.. but the reason they are rich is because they would not invest in such a dog. Detroit will continue to decline, it was no hope when I left in 97 and it's far worse now then it even was back then and I didn't think that was even possible.

Most of those are not a good deal even at $0. Minimum tens of thousands in repairs. The two fire-damaged ones are absolutely not ever worth trying to repair. So you end up with a big pile of garbage in the general shape of a house, and it's in a terrible part of Detroit. No thanks.

Sometimes I wonder if Detroit could get its own version of the CCC going and get people to demo and rebuild homes in a 'New Reality' layout. Instead of a bunch of abandoned homes, tear them down, build one nice house on an acre lot. Just keep going until the city balances itself out. I'd go so far as to have military units training (for limited times, not forever) for their MOS that fits these types of needs there.

Clearly the city is beyond helping itself in a normal fashion. Kick the under retirement age able bodied folks off free social services, put them into a CCC, and get the working actually improving their own community. Sure whoever proposes such a thing will be branded a 'racist', but, it's it more 'racist' to just allow these folks to live in, around, and a part of squallor?

I wouldn't no, even wealthy people who live in gated communities need a job and resources (stores, etc.). Not to mention putting a gated community in these areas would be a prime target for local gangs and criminals.

To be honest if I went that route I would hire George Zimmerman to run the community watch group and put it on national news. It's the only way I would get people to live there.

Property in Detroit would only be a viable investment if you also have access to Eco-ranger units and their nanite-cleanse ability.

What's the open carry law for long-arms in Detroit? Wonder if well intentioned homeless people could start pooling up money to buy these places in blocks, then form their own guard militias to patrol the streets. I'm sure the NRA could provide weapons on loan and the local unions would be happy to start constructing walls/fences.

What if you gated all the way to the freeway? And inside the gate was places like stores, schools, etc? If the area is close enough by freeway to jobs then that might work.

As far as stopping crime, surround your super-community with 40 foot walls with razor wire on top and guard towers. Like a backwards prison.

I wouldn't worry about lowly common thieves and criminals as much as I would worry about the thieves and criminals who operate the local government. They'd shake you do for every last penny and then some. The petty criminals are not the real issue as much as the local government is when it comes to creating long term disincentives to living in such a place if you are one the few remaining tax payers. So unless they give you the ability to un-incorporate from Detroit itself you will just end up getting hosed.

lmao, you have no clue what you're talking about. There are several wealthy communities in Detroit, WITHOUT gates...and yet, it is not the Gangster's paradise you claim it would be.

I wish I could pretend to be an expert on a city I've never been to.

I have couple of buddies that live in Detroit, go there a lot and live about 11 miles away. Some parts are bad some are not so bad. My buddy lives in Mexican Town, good food nice place. You can find cheap houses but closing/ and then you have to bring up to code or either tear it down, and costs a lot.

I wasn't so thinking of a plan for Detroit. More like a TV series or novel.
