15.6 (16.9) 1366*768

17" (16:10) 1440*900

I really hate diagonal measurement, makes it more difficult to get screen height and width.

If you go to the mfr specs you can usually get the H and W measurements as well. Diagonal measurement is a marketing gimmick that we have had since the beginning of TV. The original TV's were round, BTW.

I don't think diag is necessarily a marketing gimmick. its just easier to use. I'd rather buy a Z" monitor than a X"xY" mon

Refer to Op's question - what is the area in square inches of a 19-in diagonal monitor?

Yeah, it can be caluculated if you know the aspect ratio, and subject that to trignometric calculations.

But, if you knew it was a 15 x 12 monitor, the calculation is quite simple. 15 x12 = 180 square inches. And, it matters not what the aspect ratio is.

Some simple geometry would be a good start.

Why don't you just multiply the pixels and figure out how many pixels it has? More pixels means more stuff on your screen.

Screen area also has an affect otherwise people wouldn't buy 24" monitors.

Anyways this is the screen sizes I came up with:

15.6" = 13.6" x 7.75" = 105.4

17" = 14.34" x 8.80" = 126.192

So the difference is 20.792
